DVD backups get BSOD

Alrighty,

  • i have a version 1 ps2 non modded
  • just recently replaced the laser
  • USB loader comes later in the post

So first i bought a copy of Swap magic 3.8 coder and i got the dvd and cd version. Both of them start up fine except when i try to load a backup. The first game i tried was mgs 3 substance that i know works because i tried it before on a different modded ps2.

So i slide carded it, did the procedure and what not and it gave me the black Screen of death. However the game did start up once, so i restarted the system to see if it would work if i tried again...it didn't work. So i tried final fantasy 10 and 10-2 both with the same result

So then i tried the cd version of swap magic and tried the refreshing toc method. every time i tried loading the backup, i would be kicked out to the browser. then i tried using a cd backup...this worked! I've learned that the cd backups run no problem.

So then after all this i figured i would try using USB advanced. it booted up fine detected my harddrive and stuff. went on my computer and formatted it using the USBExtreme wininst program. Installed some games. Took it to my ps2 and the games were all listed there. But when i tried loading the game, it would give me the same Bsod as Swap magic.

So i have come here for help after searching endlessly on the interwebs. PLEASE HELP ME!

Could be that the DVD coil in the laser is getting weak.

why would that affect it if it runs the usb advanced? It loads the game off the harddrive so would that affect it? Plus, i forgot to mention that it reads original dvd's fine.

sorry, I have a bad habbit of skimming through posts and plucking key words.

This is what I based my post off of.

Hence you're using your laser and it's having trouble with DVD backups which is why I came to the conclusion that the DVD coil is weak. Burned discs (expecially DVD are harder on the coils and will show if the coil is weak. Which brings me to backup dvd will not load

USB Advance just sucks and I wouldn't even screw with it to begin with.

You have a fat ps2. get a network adapter and a hard drive.

you have swapmagic. install Free MC Boot.

once installed, use HDLoader to play your games. Much more compatible.

is there an alternative to the network adapter? Because i cant really find one in my area without buying final fantasy 11, which i don't want to do...

Also, i don't want to spend more money for something that may not even work. I am also trying something else, I read somewhere that you have to format to ntfs first then do the program format

Format it to Fat32. NTFS is not going to work, and make sure to look around to see if the game you are loading is compatible.

Your DVD backups most likely dont work cuase either A. you laser is going bad, Or B. you backups discs are low quality.

You should be able to find a used network adaptor for about 15 bucks at any game store, likely you will need to ask for them to pull one out of the back. You might even find one cheaper on Ebay.

Its good advice to try to get FMCB and HDloader running. I Have a chubby PS2 with no DVD drive at all, and can successfuly run game from HD or USB.

well I ended up getting one game to work all the time on the harddrive, initial d...but the videos were choppy and such. I went to eb games today and they didnt have a network adapter, either does futureshop or walmart. And they are like 40-60 buck on ebay...so im in a predicament. Is there anyway to get the harddrive in without the network adapter?
