I'm a total and complete noob to FMCB (help please D: )
So...I took a look at the guides at http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/ . So, do I need to do the stuff on in the Installing Free MC Boot section 1st? Or can I go ahead and skip down to the Booting Installer using Swapmagic (3.6 or 3.8 Coder) part? If I need to install the Free MC Boot stuff first, what exactly do I need to have on my USB. Because the stuff that the swap disc guide has different stuff on the usb than the FMCB installation guide.
Right now on my USB I have the Install folder and Free_MCBoot.ELF. Inside the Install folder, I have ESR.ELF, SMS.ELF, HDLOADER.ELF, and BOOT.ELF. Inside the Inject folder I have the DVDELF.BIN thing. Is there anything else I need on my USB? I tried this with my swap magic and it gets stuck at the splash screen. It doesn't go the place with the codes where I am supposed to copy the files onto my MC.
P.S. Sorry for being a total noob

In which splash-screen does it freeze?
In FMCB, or SwapMagic?
If in SwapMagic, try the trick someone posted earlier, or try another USB-Device.

It gets stuck at the SwapMagic screen. I'm also not sure whether I have the right stuff on my MC (Could someone clarify). I've already tried 2 other USB's than the one I'm currently using. I have the fat ps2 scph39001.

I think it might have to do something with the stuff that I have on my USB because I'm not entirely sure what I was supposed to have on it...
Here's what I have currently:

It's nothing to do with the files when Swapmagic freezes.
The files on your USB are fine for me.
Try to turn off the ps2 from the back switch and folow the steps again.

Yeah, I tried doing that but it still ends up freezing. The light thing on my USB blinks the 1st time I do the steps as well as the 2nd time after I reset the PS2.

Maybe your USB is incompatible with PS2. I have a Kingston DataTraveler and is not working too.
If you can, try with other USB stick.

Well, I was trying with one USB because I wasn't sure if it was 1.1 compatible or 2.0 compatible. I think after all the testing it is a 2.0. I didn't even bother trying the other one because it was a 2.0. However, I tried using it and the PS2 rejected it just like it did with the unlabeled USB. Therefore, I'm assuming that they're both 2.0 USBs... I might just have to borrow a 1.1 compatible USB from one of my friends and try it with that.

I am sure that you will have success with USB 1.1 stick.
I'm using Sony USM1GJ (USB 1.1 compatible) stick and it's working fine.
Give a try and post your results.
Wish you good luck!

Wait... I think my USB 2.0 is 1.1 compatible. Because this site says it is http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DN it's the last one, Toshiba 512MB Transmemory USB Flash Drive, only difference is mine is 2 gb. But my PS2 is still not able to read it/gets stuck at the swap magic screen. Any suggestions?

Well, you have swap magic, so if you can get a hold of a compatible mass storage device (card reader, usb hard disk, a mobile phone, a camera...any can be compatible) you can always compile a cd/dvd with ule and some elf files to not totally waste the disc and and load it with sm. Then just either run the installer from the disc or try if some of your mass storage devices from ule.
You can also ask a friend for some pendrive or a PSP, which I think is compatible with all existing ps2 usb drivers.

I really don't know why your USB is not working.
But you can try a different method for installing FMCB.
For example:
You have swapmagic, right?
Just download uLE CD or DVD image from http://psx-scene.com/forums/official...-28-a-198.html and burn it to a disk.
Start ps2 with Swapmagic disk without USB and swap it with uLE disk.
uLE will load, plug your USB and from uLE filebrowser select mass and navigate to installer ELF.
This will work 100%.

Ule has hanged for me more than once when trying to access a non compatible usb mass device, instead of the "normal" behaviour of just being unable to read it's contents.

What will happen when attempting to access an incompatible USB device in any homebrew program (including uLE) is mainly dependent on factors that the main author of each such program has no direct control over. It is mostly a matter of how the protocol variants covered by the USB device driver used by the program differ from the protocol variant used by the physical device being used. And for 'unlucky' combinations the device driver will hang, often hanging the entire program as well.
However, I just made a search of this thread and noticed that the FAT32 file system has not been mentioned even once here. So it is quite likely that a number of the failed attempts were simply due to using a filesystem not implemented in the PS2 drivers, such as NTFS, or one with an incomplete implementation such as FAT16 (frequently just called FAT).
So it may be worth rechecking some of the same devices again, and reformat them to FAT32 for a new test if they did use other filesystems in the original tests.
Best regards: dlanor

Thanks dlanor. But I made sure both my flash drives were formatted to FAT32 before doing any tests. I guess I'll just have to burn a CD or get another flash drive. I'm goign to have to return my friend's Swap Magic soon though, so I need to get FMCB onto my MC.
