FMCB, New at this stuff, Help appreciated
Hi, Im new around here, and I would like some help/information on this.
Im planning on maybe getting the newest slim ps2 and using this mod on it (
the SCPH-90000) im planning on getting the jap version since I think that's
the only version available currently. I've been reading up on some things
and I already have a basic idea of how to install FMCB, I also read this guide
( http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials...all_guide.html ) but
what I want to know is if the usual installation method's work ( such as
using swap magic, or some other cheat device ) on the NTSCJ-SCPH-
90000's, I heard there was some usb drive compatibility issues with the slim
models too, and something like " program region " issues and such. Anyway
all help is appreciated.
Regards,
Jack

Wish i could help ya, but i dont have that console , nor have i read anything about it in particular. So im assuming it either doesnt have any issues with the 'regular' methods you mentioned, or nobody has that console with Free McBoot installed.

I heard, there was a problem.
90K seem to be more similar to 10K-Models.

No need to get a Japanese console: you can get it in other countries. It was quietly released in the USA some weeks ago, though there were big "announcements" for the JPN and India versions. I've seen it at Wal-Mart and Best Buy, usually next to older PS2s. You can see a diagram of the power brick on the top of the old ones' boxes and the new ones do not show it. The box art is also different. IIRC, the PS2 image is zoomed and tilted on the new units (for marketing effect?).
Because they have been in stores for weeks, I would have expected SOME reports of issues if there are any. Also, the JPN version has been available for much, much, much longer, so I'm sure that one of them would have reported any issues (perhaps this is what TnA heard?).

What problems do 10K units have?

You should ask those, who have tested these series with FMCB.
I didn't have one of those here. :-/

hmm, i just went online and checked, is it the 97,000 model? that seems to be it.
In that case what about the whole usb problem deal? I mean i know its an on and off thing and no way around it, but are there simply no ways to increase the chances for the usb drive to work?

Not really, because both manufacturers and retailers are inconsistent about some things that may affect compatibility, so even if you buy exactly the same type that someone else has used successfully, the one you get may be delivered in an incompatible 'state'.
For example:
Just a few days ago I bought some new SanDisk sticks. One being a 2GB 'Cruzer Tag' model, while the other was an 8GB 'Cruzer Micro Skin' model.
The 8GB unit was perfectly compatible from start, even pre-formatted to FAT32 as needed.
The 2GB unit was completely unrecognized by the PS2, due to its being split into two partitions, one being the main storage area and the other (the primary one) being a simulated CD holding 'launchpad' software intended to autoboot under Windows.
No USB drive with split storage areas is really suitable for use with PS2 homebrew and in cases like this one, where the 'primary' area is read-only, it is completely unusable.
Fortunately I had a hunch that others too would have found that kind of drive setup irritating, and some googling then revealed that there is a tool available to remove the nonsense partition (just google for "launchpadremoval.exe"), and after using that tool the 'simulated CD' section of the 2GB stick was eliminated. And after reformatting that stick to FAT32 it too works fine with PS2 homebrews.
But one difference in compatibility still remains, as the 8GB unit is also compatible with CodeBreaker, while the 2GB unit is not.
Best regards: dlanor
