This may be a stupid question but can you install yellow dog on your pc too? To be spacific the same version you put on the PS3 can it be put on PC or do you have to use a differnt version?

Yellow dog linux is a Power PC adaptation of Fedora/ Red Hat Linux. It used to be a solution aimed at Mac users who wanted to run Linux. So, no. You can't install it on a PC. However, you could probably piece together a pretty good likeness, that uses the same packages or programs.

At least one non-RPM based distro is compiled.

I would think that it's possible to have a Debian based distro on the PS3...provided that it's built though for the PPC architecture. I agree with you 'barf', I have RPM allergies too but hopefully, we'll see something made specifically for the PS3, that's Debian-based.

Now that I'm looking around, Ubuntu has a 'PowerPC' ISO available. I don't own a PS3 just yet, but it'd be cool to see if someone could get it to install...???...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have installed UbuntuPPC on G3/266 oldworld and Mystic450 newworld macs. So yes, UbuntuPPC sure exists,
not all packages are precomiled however, but most can be compiled from source :-)

Here is how to install UbuntuPPC on the PS3: http://psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/
