Upgraded to 250gb drive in my 40gb model. Backed up PS3 system first on a partition I made on my pc IDE drive (42gb formatted in fat32) using a ide/usb adapter. Installed new 250gb had and restored old system data. Now I want to use the old 40gb notebook drive I took out of it for something else, but my pc won't see it to reformat it. How can I reformat the old ps3 drive for a different use?
In Windows XP, press [Windows Key]+R, type "compmgmt.msc". On the left pane, click Storage, Disk Management. The drive should appear in the list on the right. From this point, you probably want to delete any partition on the disk, then format.

Nope, drive never appears under disk management or anything else except "data lifeguard tools" that came with an ide drive I have in there. It shows the old ps2 drive as 1 ntfs partition 0kb in size but there is no partion to select and delete to reformat it...I still can't do anything to it! I will try with a friend's mac this weekend.
I guess you need a lower-level utility then. You can try a boot disk, like Ultimate Boot CD.
GParted Live should be really easy too: http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=271779
Just download and burn the iso, boot your computer with it, and away you go. The interface is similar to Windows Disk Management.
Hello Chad I`m new to the site. But i work with comp in my spare time the way i see it is that your looking to reformat your old 40g hdd to use it some thing else. If thats what youwant to do heres a site you can look at it might help you. I use this to totaly wipe out all HDD.
Thank you guys for the suggestions and links to format utilities. Problem solved, I bought a new sata to usb adapter and that solved all my problems. Apparently the ide/sata to usb adapter I had been using stopped functioning for sata and only worked with ide anymore.
