There are basically three methods for booting burned discs
1: Install a modchip
2: Use disc-swapping (bad for the CDVD drive)
3: Use ESR or Memento with patched DVDV discs
The last of those methods only applies to DVD discs so with an unmodded console the only method for booting burned CD-R discs it disc-swapping, which I'm not going to describe here.

and how do you load an iso that is not a game?
|
If it's made to be bootable, then you treat it just like a game disc, and if it's not bootable I'm not sure what you mean by 'load an iso', as there is no standard way of doing that other than booting it. But if you simply want to access the disc contents in homebrew software, this can be done with patched DVDV discs using the 'mcard' variant of ESR (normally restarts uLE with the ability to access the patched disc).

I have Free McBoot with SMS, uLE, Cogswap, usbadvance, and more. I can add any homebrew I want. I have lots of blank cds and dvds and a usb drive.

With homebrew stuff it makes little sense to have a separate boot disc for each. It's much more convenient to launch the different homebrew elfs from uLE (which is the kind of need it was originally designed for).
And with FMCB you don't really need to use ANY boot disc anymore, since it will boot uLE directly from MC, and you can then use uLE to launch any other elf on that MC (or an MC in the other slot, or from a USB device, etc).

One more thing, no matter how I format it I can't get anything to show up in usbadvance. Any advice?
|
One common problem with modchips and USBAdvance is something called a "Macrovision fix", which must be turned off to let USBAdvance work properly. If your chip has that fix active with no way of turning it off, then USBAdvance will never work for you, regardless of what device you use or how you format it. In such a case only a hardware change can fix that.
As to the formatting of the USB device, only one format is acceptable, and that is FAT32. Testing any other format is a complete waste of time.

I really want to use my old 4 gb iPod Mini
|
Sorry, but I don't think I've seen any success reports for iPods, though I have seen several failure reports. I don't know jack about iPod models myself, so maybe it can work with yours, but I seriously doubt it.

until I get a real hdd (usbadvance doesn't even work really).

From this I assume that you either have a fat PS2, or a slim PStwo of a model older than v14 (product code less than SCPH-75000), as newer slim PStwo models are unable to use a 'real' HDD (meaning one connected by IDE interface, without using USB).
