Hi i'm pretty new to the site though not limited to the PS2 scene...here's the thing...i've been wondering how i'm suppose to burn a ps2 backup to a dvd...what type of dvd im suppose to use...
My ps2's a V9...had the laser newly replaced, modded with an unknown chip...and burning a bootable independence boot disc works fine on generic cdrs...now im wondering how im suppose to burn a ps2 dvd unto what media...
I remember not long ago the root cause as to why i screwed up my ps2...i borrowed a backup copy of GTA3 and DMC1 from a friend and found out that my unit wont read em...im not sure if he used DVD-R or DVD+R,..i went nuts and kept looking for ways on how i could make the games run...i resorted to laser adjustments and finaly screwed up my laser by overadjusting my lens Pots'
...Now im back from scratch w/ a new laser...so i thought i could probably make it run my re-burning the dvd with different media...im planning on using nero 6 the thing is...when i pop in the problematic dvd's (dmc and GTA3) i get to the playstation logo and then unit hangs from there on...just black screen...now i thought that if i could probably burn the games using the method i use in nero6 to burn an independence disk...would it probably work???what media would be best to use? dvd+ or dvd-?..i heard DVD- were the conventional media back then...u think it would probably work out?...coz my ps2 reads backups that i have its just these 2 dvds as an exception...would really appreciate your help thanks!
One last thing,...the backups that i have here at home i dont know if they're DVD- or DVD+ how do i differentiate the two?...the problematic dvd's had purple data side?..and the ones i have @ home are golden data sides....does that help???

Help
Well i heard the ps2 was iffy on what it reads. supposedly it reads better dvd-r. On the front of the media you are using such as TDK they have there label on the front and information on what type of disc it is. The ones i use are TDK x8 and they have the type it is in caps like DVD-R.
As for what types of media. Here's a list from a modder on another forum on what Media saves your laser a bit of sweat.
1ST CLASS MEDIA
Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:
PVC = Pioneer (Japan) = (-R)(-RW) ... media is no longer made
MXLRG0x = Maxell (Japan) = (-R)(-RW)
YUDENT, TYG0x = Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim (Japan) = (-R)(+R)
MCC, MKM = Mitsubishi Chemicals (Singapore/Taiwan) = (-R)(-RW)(+R)(+RW)
TDK, TTG0x, TTH0x = TDK Corp (Taiwan/Japan) = (-R)(-RW)
SONY0xD = Sony (Japan/Taiwan) = (-R)(-RW)
2ND CLASS MEDIA
Decent discs, though not perfect, about 80-95% success rate:
RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh (Taiwan) = (+R)(+RW)
PRODISC = Prodisc Media (Taiwan) = (-R)(+R)
RITEK = Ritek (Taiwan) = (+R)(-R)(-RW)(+RW)
FUJIFILM = Fuji = (-R)(+R)
OPTODISC = Optodisc = (-R)
INFODISC = Infodisc Media = (+RW)
3RD CLASS MEDIA
Quality can be very questionable, about 50-80% success rate:
LEADDATA, LD01, LD, LEDA = Lead Data = (-R)(-RW)
BEALL = Samsung BeAll (Taiwan) = (-R)(+R)
MBI = Moser Beaur (India) = (-R)(+R)(+RW)
MAM-A, MAM-E (USA, Europe) = Mitsui = (-R)
PRINCO, fake TDK = Princo (Taiwan) = (-R)(-RW)
ONIDTECH = Ul Tran Technology (Taiwan) = (-R)
MUST = Unknown OEM = (-R)
GSC001, GSC002 = Gigastorage (Taiwan) = (-R)(+R)
CMC, CMCMAG = CMC Magnetics (Taiwan) = (+R)
PHILIPS = Philips (Taiwan) = (+RW)
4TH CLASS MEDIA
Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate:
CMC, CMCMAG = CMC Magnetics (Taiwan) = (-R)
PIODATA, PIO = LeadData/ Ritek (Taiwan) = (-R))(+R)
OPTODISC = Optodisc (Taiwan) = (+R)(+RW)
LONGTEN = Jilin Qingda ??? (China) = (-R)
YIJHAN = Yi Jhan Technology (Taiwan) = (-R)
ALL FAKE MEDIA = mostly InfoSmart (HK), E-Net (UK) and Mitsui (USA,Europe)
AN31, AN32, ANWELL, AN30 = "default" stamper code (usually Infosmart) = (-R)
AML = Advance Media Limited (Taiwan) = (-R)
INFOSMART, ISO001 = Infosmart (China) = (-R)(+R)
DAXON = BenQ/Acer (+R)(-R)
VANGUARD, VDSPMS = Unknown OEM = (-R)
UME001 = UmeDisc (Hong Kong) = (-R)
WFKA = Wealthfair Investment (China) = (-R)(+R)
this was taken from Afterdawn.com which i believe was taken from somewhere else.
The media is listed from good to bad 1st rate being the best.
Also on the burning thing Nero should work but i believe people use a more simpler program cuz Nero start smart can be kinda confusing finding what your supposed to do. Peeps use DVD Decryptor. Its a program that reads the dvd you put in by going to iso read and it makes an image on the computer you take out the game and put in a blank dvd and go to iso write and write the image onto the disk it just made. Hope this helps.

thats not strange because most new chips don't use the f wire
the f wire is needed for cdrw or dvd-rw
you can added but it is not recommended because a cdrw or dvd-rw is not that good for your laser (in a v12 you will have a very fast burnout)
grtz

I'm not sure if this matters but on my ps2 box this is what it says (sorry it's in japanese). I have a SCPH500000 v10
http://home.comcast.net/~ttu00/cd.jpg
For #5 it says:
(5) DVD-R/-RW(Video Mode), DVD-RW(VR Mode), DVD+R/+RW
I don't know what the different modes are for but it seems that my drive can read everything.
My USA ps2 doesn't state anything specific on the box nor the manual.

My 1st use of swap magic was of a DVD-R Datawrite Mach4 copy of Naruto shipuuden Narutimate accel.Iso file straight to disc using nero. I have a silver fatboy PS2 UKPal version (guessing its a 5 by this point). Can someone clarify my version?
Model number is SCPH-50003. Im usually a PSP man but decided to make the jump to PS2.

so what is better for V15a or V16 system (some sites say V15a & other say V16 !#?) with Mat. Inf V1.88? DVD + / - R or both works fine..?
i use memorex <-- any "flawless" brand anyone could suggest?
my DVD burner burns these memorex DVDs in blue / green color with rings at the bottom.
...somebody said that this might cause the games not to work, but it didn't..so what causes the rings and the color--> burner or DVD?

Sorry if this has been answered b4 in this thread, but it's too long to read through.
Both my Fugi DVD+R and Fugi DVD-R work with my PS2. Is one better for my laser? Also are different brands better for the laser (ex. Sony, TY, Memorex,...? Thanks. Sorry again if this has been answered.

I also use TDKs both the DVD-R and the DVD+RW. They both have worked flawlessly so far. I have burnt 6 games so far including Gamecube originals and homebrew.

Wait, im confused. I have been using DVD+R for a long time now to run backup and homebrew on my PS2. But I accidently ordered a batch of DVD-R and its working too. Is it just random which one will work and which wont? So it dosent matter whihc one I use, or will one work better than the other?
I have a V9/V10 PS2 with a Matrix Infinity, what would be the best type to use for this?

TDK DVD+R, x16 speed works flawlessly on my v9 PS2 when burned at x2.4 speed. I burned P3FES and a few other games on it without problems unlike certain brands like Philipp's DVD+/-R x16 speed and Imation DVD+/-R x16 speed.

Maxell DVD-R 1-4x speed and Verbatim DVD+R disks work well with V9 - MCBOOT - Cogswap combination. No problems yet. Samsung Pleomax DVD-RW disks don't work at all.

I used a Staples DVD+R and a Maxell DVD-R. They both worked in my PS2 with laser calibrations but didn't work on my SCPH-30001 or SCPH-70012 (laser calibrations is SCPH-39001)
Are these disks any good or is my PS2 dying?
Original games work flawlessly.
