network trouble

hello.

im trying to setup sms to access my windows shared folders.

i set the ip/netmask/gateway, and it seems to work, as i can ping the PS2
from my computers.

i copied the file SMS.smb to sms folder containing :

192.168.123.55
PIKA-
PLAYSTATION2

i set the network type to SMB/CIFS, and started networking,
but nothing happens (nothing shows next to CD icon in sms , so i cant
select network server)

i have no idea whats wrong, or how to debug it, so any help would be apreciated. thank you.

The SMS.smb file should be setup like this:

Computer's IP address (ie 192.168.123.55)
Computer Name (ie PIKA-)
Playstation Name (ie PLAYSTATION2)
User name for logging into windows/linux (ie user)
Password for logging into windows/linux (ie password)
Description of samba share; this will show up under the configuration menu of SMS under network settings (ie PIKA)

Multiple servers are accomplished by continuing the SMS.smb file by the following:

192.168.123.55
computer1
Playstation2
user
password
computer1
192.168.123.60
computer2
Playstation2
user2
password2
computer2

and etc.

I have 3 servers setup in my SMS.smb file and it works as it should. The problem that I see you had is you forgot to setup the username/password and description. Try that out and let us know what happens

the smb file is case sensitive.
it should be SMS.smb not SMS.SMB,
when sharing folders be sure to rename it shorter with no spaces in between,
this setup works for me.. i hope this solves your problem..

hmmm so i changed the configuraton to the following

192.168.123.17
ABCDE
PLAYSTATION2

FIRST COMPUTER
192.168.123.55
PIKA-
PLAYSTATION2

SECOND COMPUTER

so under network settings of SMS i can choose between each of them, but
it still doesnt work.

my SMS.smb is named correctly, as else i couldnt choose SMB/CIFS as protocol, also all my shares are <8 charracters with no spaces.

i left the user/pass lines empty as my shares are not protected.

i'm clueless here, so please help.

(using SMS 2.7)

No. The network adaptor is how the old fat PS2 models got a LAN connection (and also an HDD interface).
For a new slim PStwo model the corresponding networking hardware is built-in, so no adaptor is needed.

That is the problem right there. Just like you can't connect to PCs together with only a 'straight' network cable, neither can you do it with a PS2 (which really is a small and specialized computer in its own right).

Any normal LAN switch or router will suffice.

Or you can get hold of a 'cross-connected' network cable. These look exactly like the 'straight' ones, except if you look closely at the colour-coded wires in the connector (if wires are coloured ). Then you'll notice that the wires are connected in differing order for the two ends, whereas a 'straight' cable would have them connected identically at each end. Any well-stocked computer shop should have both kinds.

The cross-connected cable can be used to connect your PS2 directly to a PC, without any other equipment.

Best regards: dlanor

thank you,

yes i know what are network cables, bout crossovers and stuff,
know how to connrect things toghether

ok but my problem is still not solved.

SMS still doesnt find my shares. I'm gonna do some packet capturing to
see if it even communicates with my pcs ....

so here's a quicklist :

- ps2 and pcs are connected ok, this part is not a problem,
i can ping ps2 while SMS is running
- windows shares work ok, as i can access them from other computers
(they dont require authorization)
- SMS.smb seems to be ok, as i can shoose SMB/CIFS as network protocol
in SMS network configuration.

!- well, after i start my networking, shares dont appear in the "top list of media"

another question, in case this never gets solved .....

can SMS read data from my USB disk ?

To your last question: Yep, SMS can read from USB, you just have to enable it.

For the rest: Have you tried to reach your PS2 via FTP? Just enable using uLaunch the network and try to ping your PS2. This should show you if your LAN connection is working.

I've recognized some unresolved bugs in the latest SMS regarding my old fat PS2, maybe you should use an older SMS version (something like 2.5).
