i tried sms v2.7 and v2.8 and i can't play mp3's
here's what's happennig: i see the files on my usb stick but when i press x on of the files on of the files play for 3 sec then exit, and the other it's not even starting
the files are playing fine on linux and windows on pc with several players, from both the usb stick and the hdd on which they are stored on the pc
the files are encoded in variable bitrate, could be this the problem?
thx and sorry if i posted in the wrong section
problem solved, oddly i deleleted everything on the card and put back, and now works, but it is still strange that on the pc worked

New bug for SMS v2.8
After updating to SMS v2.8 on one of my PS2 consoles I noticed that it could no longer play a movie which I had watched with SMS just the other day. I then tried that movie with some different SMS versions in an attempt to pinpoint when the bug appeared. But I couldn't do that perfectly, as I lack some early revisions of v2.8...
What I can say with certainty is that the movie works fine with SMS v2.7 (unrevised), but fails completely with SMS v2.8 rev3, as well as rev4 and rev 5.
The attached ZIP contains an AVI clip including none of the movie content (for those who're paranoid about copyright issues... ) and gives identical SMS behaviour as the full movie, working fine with SMS v2.7, but causing an exception crash with SMS v2.8 rev3 through rev5.

Thanks anyway.

Weird...
In my new test series I don't get the same results as before, even when I use exactly the same elfs that I used then... I did get the same error as reported above (in post#1227) also with Rev1 of SMS v2.8 once. But when I tried it a bit later (after tests with other revisions) the clip worked fine. And in my most recent test it even worked with SMS v2.8 Rev5, where it constantly failed in several tests made earlier today.
So the only thing I can say with certainty now is that results are inconsistent...
Right now I can play both the test clip and the full movie that failed repeatedly earlier, even when using the very same elfs I used then, including the latest one (Rev5).
I just don't get it...

Where is your test movie stored?
Network/Ethernet? USB/hard drive/memory stick? CD/DVD?

I first discovered the problem through network, which is my normal storage medium for media files, as I have lots of storage space on the three PCs in my LAN, which SMS accesses through the Samba protocol. After this discovery I made the test clip, and tried it out both on network and hdd0:, with continued consistent failure in both locations, for a long series of tests.
And then somewhat later, after having made no changes at all (but after making my initial report) it suddenly started working, and kept on doing so. Like I said before, this inconsistent behaviour makes no sense to me. I can see no reason at all for the altered behaviour.
If it had been the other way around, first working and later not, then I could at least blame it on some kind of 'spontaneous corruption' in storage. But when it first fails and later works, that just doesn't work. There can be no such thing as 'spontaneous uncorruption'...
So I still just don't get it...

Thanks dlanor,
Do you think that rather than the SMS elf itself, it may have something to do with the way SMS changes its settings file with each new version, particularly when it comes to the settings that relate to the changes he made to the network/host support.
i've had a few times when i had to manually delete the settings file from the memcard and then let SMS recreate it to allow a new version of SMS to work properly, perhaps when you jumped back to a previous release it added something that later releases dont, and thats fixed the issue..
I guess if thats the case, most people dont see these compatability issues if they jump straight from release to release rather than a huge jump from 2.7 to 2.8rev 5
I wonder if EEUG can check that certain variables from earlier versions for compatibility are still set in the latest versions..

@psi88:
Your theory about the reason for the problem I had may very well be right, but unfortunately EEUG himself is the only one who can tell, as only he has any direct insight into the binary format of "SMS.cfg", and which data fields in it are associated with what internal SMS variables. Since the file is not 'human-readable' it's vírtually impossible for anyone else to interpret its contents even with a hexeditor (except for a few obvious strings).

Hi
I'm new to PS2 and to SMS Player. A great piece of software, I must say.
I've found a bug with subtitles that are in MPL2, microDVD and TMP formats (TXT subtitles). Actually there are two bugs, but one is very minor, virtually not worth mentioning.
To help you identify source of those bugs I've done some researching and I tested every major and few minor versions of SMS Player that have been released.
If there is an empty line at the end of the file with subtitles, right before displaying the last line of subtitles video and sound freeze. Only reset of the console helps. It started to happen in version 2.8 Rev.3 and it was all right in every version before.
Second bug is also related to TXT subtitles. When there's no empty line at the end of the file with subtitles, SMS Player does not freeze but last letter (a sign actually, as it's usually a dot at the end of the sentence) from last line of subtitles is not displayed. As I said, it's very minor bug and it started to appear in version 2.5 Rev.4.
Everything is all right when using SRT subtitles, but unfortunately they are not so popular here in Poland as TXT.
Those bugs are really easy to reproduce, you can use any movie you want and use one of the subtitles format I mentioned above. To make it easier, you can find examples below. Just copy and paste them into a new *.txt file. Remember to make an empty line at the end of the file (or not, depends which bug do you want to check).
Code:
[30][60]line 1
[60][90]line 2
[90][110]line 3
Code:
{1}{1}25.000
{75}{150}line 1
{150}{225}line 2
{225}{275}line 3
Code:
00:00:03:line 1
00:00:06:line 2
00:00:09:line 3
Or you can just download them (right click and save):
http://zoog.yoyo.pl/ps2/microdvd.txt
http://zoog.yoyo.pl/ps2/microdvd_nl.txt
http://zoog.yoyo.pl/ps2/mlp2.txt
http://zoog.yoyo.pl/ps2/mlp2_nl.txt
Some technical info:
PS2 Fat v9.
Modchip (unfortunately I don't know which one).
I'm starting SMS Player from uLaunchELF 4.21. SMS Player, the movie and subtitles are on the USB drive (PNY 4GB).
I tried to delete SMS dir from memory card and to change different options ( Use exception handler especially), so it's not the matter of configuration.
I tried to load SMS Player from CD, USB and memory card so I don't think it's the matter of location of the player.
Of course those bugs can be avoided by converting subtitles to SRT format, but I thing it's not the point. Right now I'm using SMS Player v2.5 Rev.3 and I would like to upgrade to latest version. I hope those bugs can be fixed easily and everything will be ok in next version of SMS Player.

I'm slightly confused on this one since it works with everything else, and sadly I've never heard anyone say anything about AC3 encoded audio not producing sound. I honestly love SMS as it kicks the crap out of well...everything IMHO, PS3, 360, etc, the only thing it doesn't have an edge over is a PC hooked to the tv. So I'm hoping someone knows what the heck is going on here Is there some option I'm overlooking or some weird setting I'm completely missing? And like I said, EVERYTHING ELSE works, network, mp3's etc, just doesn't decode AC3 and make it audible.
edit:
omfg... I fixed it, I saw someone talking about the dolby stuff and the s/pdif turned it off and bingo worked... NOW I FEEL LIKE A MORON... wewt, but after 2 years, finally fixed, lol... narf...

Oh that is great info, I've been busting my head with that one too. Thanks

I can confirm too that SMS crashes if there is a empty last line in .sub subtitles.
I don't know why, but it's very common that there is empty last line...
For a workaround just delete the last empty line.

Rev 6 crash
I just tried rev 6 of 2.8 and picked an avi file at random from my SAMBA share and when it tried to load the video, I get the exception handler with exception "address error (load)". I tried the same video on the rev I've been using (2) and it worked fine. I wish I could give more info but I don't know what I could provide that'd help.

You mean samba?
As far as I know, it was NTBA2 ("MyPS2"-Author).

Thanks!
Is the source available anywhere? Is it still being maintained/updated?
I would like to help fix a bug that stops it working with SMS and Mac OS X 10.5

Not sure, if it was the last one,...
It is not updated by the author afaik, but maybe unofficially in some projects, or in SVN.
Is SMS-Source up-to-date in the SVN?
If so, you can use the SMS-Source directly.

Are we sure we are talking about the same thing?
I am after samba client that SMS uses.
I think perhaps you are talking about a samba server for PS2?
I may be wrong.
