How can I run browse pics from a USB drive with MyPS2? (total newbie)

First, I'm totally new to PS2 homebrew software, I have no experience with elfs/launchers/memory cards etc.

What I have:

-modded PS2 (normal model), the modchip is MATRIX MX4.1
-one Sony PS2 Memory Card
-two USB sticks (100 MB each)

I don't have a HDD.

Now, the Matrix website says the following about my modchip:

Quote:
The MX4 is the enhanced substitute of the Matrix MXL2.
It is intended to be a cheap solution for the users that do not need advanced features like Memory Card Launching Applicatons.
So it seems I can't launch Memory Card Launching Applications, right?
But is it still possible for me to use MyPS2?

Another question: does my modchip (MATRIX MX4.1) support DEV1 ?

What's DEV1?

In order to access your usb stick, you'll need a "USBD.IRX" file install somewhere on your MC or on your Hard Drive.

That's OK. Everyone has to start somewhere, so even the present experts were newbs some time ago.

Then I suggest that you keep most homebrew programs and their data on the USB sticks, to preserve MC space. But it is a good idea to have some basic tool on the MC, and most tools will in any case need some MC folders for config saving etc, even if the program itself is stored elsewhere.

Then I don't think myPS2 is the right program for you, as I believe it needs an HDD. (It makes a partition of its own on it.) I may be wrong about that, but in any case the program doesn't seem to have any active support by its author any more, so it doesn't really have a future unless he (or someone else) revives the project.

But there are other programs around, which do treat the HDD as an optional device, like it should be (even when you have one installed).

----- snip ----- re: some BS about the lack of advanced features
This stuff basically means that all you can do with this chip is to boot burned CDs and no more, but also 'no less'... The programs you do boot from such CDs can do most other things you need (assuming you choose the right ones )

That only means that the mod-chip itself won't do that job for you, of starting programs stored on the MC. But some other program that you boot from CD can still do it, though in your case it would make more sense to run most large programs from USB instead, so as to preserve the limited free space on the MC.

I'm not sure of that, as I think it needs an HDD. But you could try uLaunchELF instead (in another subforum of this site).

Dev1 is just a name for the ability of a mod-chip to launch a program from the PS2 Memory Card at boot/reset, instead of using only CDVD discs.

There's also a Dev2 term, which means the ability to start a program from HDD at boot/reset, and some chips have additional boot modes for other devices. (eg: DMS4 allows user programs to be stored in its internal Flash memory)

Since your chip doesn't have such features, you can't use them, but you can still launch programs from other devices indirectly, by help of a program booted from a CDVD disc.
