V9 and Infinity now barely reads DVD... SOLVED

I'm sure I've read about this before somewhere but can't find where. I've just fitted a Matrix Infinity into a PAL v9 console, done the romeo mod. Booted and installed firmware 1.54 but now DVD's will barely read. Whether backups or originals, they start to boot but failed saying damaged disc or something along those lines. This is the first v9 and first Infinity I've used. Have always used DM$ and only done v4/5/6/7 and 12's so far.

Do I have to change laser pots and/or the azimuth screw.

Any info would be appreciated,

Mark

If it were me, i would put the LA pin back down to the original position. If that doesnt help then you might have a problem with the laser coils.

what about CD's? if those read perfectly then its probably your laser pot for DVD's that needs a decrease, as CDs and DVDs have a sepearate pot on the laser for adjustment. If nothing reads but your lase works (goes up and down and back and forth) it might need a cleaning and a white-screw adjustment. Make sure your using it sitting down and not standing up.

Thanks for your replies all. CD's read perfecly, DVD's start to boot but you can hear the laser struggling, even with originals that loaded fine before. I will measure the DVD pot resistance and lower it a bit to see if that helps. I just wanted to check if anyone else had noticed anything similar AFTER doing the romeo mod.

Cheers,

Mark

Ok, I checked the CD and DVD pots, the CD reads 1435ohms the DVD read 1550ohms. From reading around the net the average for the DVD pot seems to be between 1200 and 1400 for v9 so I dropped down to 1400 and left the CD pot as was. CD backups boot flawlessly but DVD's whether they be original, backup, movie or movie back don't read. When DVD backups or original games are put in, they are detected almost instantly with the swirly orbs screen ending prematurely, it just won't get to the Playstation 2 logo (or Matrix 1.54 in this case). Would the wires A,B,G,I have an affect on this? I've used a high magnification loop to look at all joints and they seem fine and this is the first time a modding hasn't worked first time for me.

I've included pictures below

Not sure if anyone has anymore ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

try holding.. umm, start (I think) when booting to disable the infinity (comes up infinity disabled on the screen) then reset and see if originals boot, this will determine if its a console problem or a chip install problem. it could be a bad wire on your DVD part of the install, esp where you chose to solder to the BIOS chip instead of the back of the board a bridge could easily have happened. I assume you have flashed it with the newest firmware? thats an orange-dot infinity and those only came with the 1.36 firmware I believe. it MAY be possible that the flash went bad, you could try doing the update again from DEV mode, i doubt it will solve your problems though. You are using a thicker, say 24-22AWG wire for the romeo mod, and are sure the pin is not contacting the board?

Thanks for that ruddicz, I've tried that and the original game that I tested it with before chipping that did work still won't boot. I've dropped the laser resistance down to 1350ohms now and still the same behaviour. CD's still boot perfectly including PSX games. I'm beginning to think it could be this romeo mod. The wire is as short as possible, the leg is lifted well clear of the pad and I've checked that the pad is clean and unshorted, the wire I've used is the same gauge as what I've fitted the chip with (30AWG). One other thing, I've done the pupazzo fix as well by soldering a small piece of aluminium to the top of the chip and to ground around the edge of the PCB. I've flashed v1.54 firmware into the chip and tried flashing a second time just incase.

Not sure if you have any more ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Another update....

With the chip disabled and an original DVD game in, the spinning orbs show for literally just a second and it looks like the game is going to load and then just drops to the gold disc view with grey screen showing a "Playstation 2" disc.

With a backup DVD, the same thing happens except instead of dropping to the grey screen, white text at the top centre of the screen with a black background displays "unable to read disc". It's a 400C laser which I know was perfectly fine before chipping and I'm pretty sure the chipping is fine too.

Just to make sure I've been adjusting the DVD pot, it IS on the RIGHT in this picture isn't it?

Hmm, I am out of ideas. As for the DVD pot I am not sure, lol, I havn't messed with them in quite a while.

The only other thing i could suggest is a complete uninstall and reinstall, but thats quite a bit of hassle. it would let you know if the console is met the end or if its a chip problem, which now is sounding more like a chip than anything else. It sounds like some DVD points on the chip to be honest since the PS2 will pickup the PS2 game but not really know what it is. Your wires are nice and short and not crossing (too much), and if you used flux did you ensure that it sizzled away for a few seconds and made a good connection?
