With your MI upgrade disk in, try holding reset for 3 seconds to force update...
If that doesn't work you may have a older chip which requires a special upgrade procedure, or you CDVD point's need to be redone...

CDVD points are B,G,H and I. Not all of these points are being used because it depends on the version of your PS2. For instance V5 PAL and NTSC only use B and I. Just refer to the respective diagram of your PS2 version.

Hi byc2517,
I had the same problem with a different PS2 version, and it was the 'H' point that wasn't right.
Cheers

thanks, Rockindude.
my ps2 is ntsc/j 39005. is 'H' point wrong in diagram?
which point is right? must 'H' point be disconected?
if so, is it same diagram as ntsc/usa or pal?

Is it an original infinity or clone ? You definitely need to connect H, maybe even G.

G point is being used with V9/v10. Since your PS2 is a V8 so G point is not needed.

i have ps2 scph-39004 and on mb reads GH-019 so it should be V7. It has cap BIOS.
i have tryed install new Matrix Infinity in it without success. console starts normaly, and if i start it without joypad 1 screen stays black about 10-15 sec. but anything doesn't work. i have tryed to start PSx/PStwo backups whit no success. allso tryed force update the chip whit Reset down over 3 sec. But nothing seems to work =(
is there something that could be done ?
Thanks
edit: More info.

I had same problem as thread starter on V12 model.. Twice .
What i did to get it to work was to attach the H point though the install says its not needed. ( i had pal machines).. its def something to do with those b,i,g,h points.
I tried rewiring them with thicker cable ones too, and then it worked.
