Problem booting discs (V12 Slim,Matrix Infinity 1.38)
I'm using a slim PS2 with SCHP-70006. When it boots, it tells me it is using Infinity 1.38. I bought in Hong Kong pre-modded. It says it's NTSC|J on the box, which I am guessing means it's the Japanese version.
I thought that I could play PAL games by converting the signal via the chip. I happened to stumble upon what I thought to be a solution: changing the video mode via the configuration screen (by pressing Triangle + Circle). I did so and it didn't seem to work. It appeared that after saving my settings they were forgotten after I reset the chip.
I discovered that there was a 1.39 flash update, so I burned it and flashed the chip. After flashing the chip, I reset only to discover that I could play neither PS2 nor PSX games, backups or not. However, it apparently could read (though not play, due to region) DVDs. Audio CDs were fine too. I can still enter the configuration screen via Triangle + Circle, but the PS2 boots up only if I power-on and then reset.
I had heard of stories that it may have been a bootleg mod chip, i.e. a ripped-off cheapo copy. I don't want to risk opening my PS2 yet (I'm terribly clumsy at these sorts of things), so I'm just wondering if anybody has encountered this problem.
Thanks for any help or info.

u can try to reflash the chip wiht maybe 1.38 by booting the ps2 and holding reset for a lil bit for it not to go back into standby. There is another situtation that coudl have happened. U migh thave been stuck with a matrix infinity chip with a 1.31 backup flash and it reverted back to that which is not compatible with v12s. I'd open it up and check your chip to see if it's the correct one

I've been seeing this 'holding reset' thing around. I'm not sure though, does it basically mean this:
(PS2 is plugged in - power LED is red)
Press and hold the POWER BUTTON (button with red LED) for 2-3 seconds.
(PS2 will boot to green LED and shut off to red LED)
I suppose I'll open it up to take a look. Thanks.
Has anyone else encountered this? I've seen some problems on the AfterDawn forums...

Nope, doesn't work. I try to reset and only a black screen is coming up.
The weird thing is that I can access the config screen and it saves the settings, leading me to believe that it successfully flashed to 1.39. The problem is that I can't flash it back because it doesn't read any discs aside from audio and DVD movies.
Again, it doesn't actually boot on power-on (just a black screen, I hear some noises of a disc being read). I have to reset (press the reset button once) before it boots the Sony swirly boxes screen.

Thanks for that...I suppose now I'll really HAVE to open it up to see if I got dicked over with a clone...
But the thing is I don't have access to a soldering iron or any of that crazy stuff. This means I'm still looking for anyone who's solved this without using a soldering iron

I just tried messing around with config menu settings as suggested by some other people (not here) and it's still not working. I'll open it up today I suppose.
On the other hand, are there any NYC walk-in modders? Or if I bring it over...

ps2 with matrix infinity 1.38 back screen
fallennomad, i got the very same problem with u.
my ps2 is 70006 with matrixInfinity modchip.v1.38
why after i press triangle Circle to enter the menu
i change boot mode to fast and joypad 2
i pres reset as instructed and my ps2 wont read any backup cd, it say plaese insert ps2 or ps disc format
i turn it off and turn it on. but the screen only black.
i reset it, the ps2 will boot the DVD but it say plaese insert ps2 or ps disc format
i reset it and press triangle Circle, but nothing happen my ps2 still go to the ps2 menu and wont bood any backup game
i turn it off and on but (again) the screen only black.
iturn it off, turn it on again, and press triangle Circle and i can go to infinity menu, i change it back to the default setting. but this not resolve the problem
i try to update the firmware but it wont boot the firmwarwe cd. i try the push 3 second power button but its not work, the screen still in black
so everytime i power on my PS2 it will black screen and i reset it it will boot, but only original CD, this just like the modchip is OFF. but im sure not press the start button
can anyone help me solve this problem???

Clone Infinity NH9, Mobo 1.1
The chip you more than likely have in your console is a mobo 1.1 or NH9 same thing, clone of the matrix infinity. Works great if you don't have to flash and change setting and save new settings. If you do this you render the chip useless. RSOD is about all that happens once this is done. I can confirm this because I personally have had the problem before not once but a couple of times using the NH9(mobo 1.1).

orangpelupa, glad (in a good way, lol) to see someone else has the problem, at least it's not just me. I was afraid something went awry on my actual PS2. But there is one main difference: NO games work for me, backup or not.
I went to this guy and he said that it might be that my laser burned out, but I think that's a load of shit. I can still view DVDs (not play because of region block) and listen to audio CDs. I strongly suspect that replacing the modchip with a real Infinity would fix everything, but has anyone confirmed whether or not there is another solution? I'd like to see if there are any alternatives before I shell out more than half the cost of a PS2 to get it 'fixed'.
