matrix infinity worked fine for couple of days now boots to black screen
hi, ive recentlly fitted a matrix infinity modchip in a v9 ps2, its worked fine for a couple of days then all of a sudden while watching a dvd the disc started playing up so i restarted the machine and now the ps2 just boots to black screen . any help would be great.
i did have a bit of trouble doing points a,b,g,i so i decided to do the alternative install to the vias apart from point a.

Does it boot game after the blackscreen? Did you try leaving it there at the blackscreen for 1 minute? It could be because it's not detecting the controller pad 1 and it's trying to detect it.
"NOTICE!!
On turning on the PS2 the Infinity will start to llok for the Joypad in slot 1.
If no Joypad is present the Infinity will keep on looking for it for about 10/15 seconds.
The screen will remain BLACK in these 15 seconds.
After the time elapses Infinity will boot the PS2 normally."

It's almost sure not the initialization of the infinity. This is the usual another problem of the V9/V10 (the laser/la and the black screen) Well, check your controller and via points, and the board for solder balls, also the bios points. If nothing helps, remove the modchip, clean the board/soldering points. In worst case, you'll have to swap the board.

The Matrix Infinity is not a sensitive chip so I don't know if that would be a problem. You could have a defect. Try exchanging it... But wait couple days if you wanna to see if anyone here have the same problems. Try to make the install neat.
But, if you have a chip that was working fine for couple days then blackscreen couple days later it really sounds like a manufacture defect...

You don't happen to have another V9 laying around that you can swap dvd drives with can ya? Disc read errors are usually laser related...

Nah, you won't even be able to eject the dvd drive if the LA chip burnt.

Ok, I want to see if it's really the laser or not. So why don't you try removing power wire from the chip and see if it reads originals without the chip in power.

If the LA partially burns you CAN eject with no problem. I'd swap the drive to test, but if the laser is good, your board is the problem.

It burns partially? I thought pumping 12v into the thing will fry everything. But that is a possibility. You ever experience a dead LA that burnt partially?

Well, if the LA burns partially the eject function is still OK, but reading CD's/DVD's does not work. This is the wellknown LA burning problem. Then you can use the replacement IC's which will enable CD/DVD reading once again. (but you do not have to remove the full LA, as it still works partially) If the LA totally burns you don't have too many choices, as either you remove the whole LA and replace it with a new one or use Kaiser's replacement method. This is why I say there may be PARTIALLY damaged LA IC's as there were partially damaged BA's aswell on the earlier models.

Yep, that's the one. The problem is that right now, we're not really sure that the LA is the problem. Replacing it is certainly a solid troubleshooting step, just an expensive and time consuming one. I'd also like to know the values of the coils... do you know how to measure them?
If you haven't torn out the old LA yet, do me a kindness, and go over all of the legs of the LA and let us know which are showing no resistance. Be good to know, and compare with a few blown LA's I've come across.

gchris738: That is a whole LA replacement chip, and if you can eject the tray I am almost sure you DO NOT need it. The main problem as said earlier black screen usually has nothing to do with the LA itself, but rather bridge/splash on the BIOS, CDVD controller, VIA problem and some other parts. LA is gone usually if you get picture but READING is not ok, AND/OR you can not eject the tray. If you can, give the machine to a pro to look at it, before investing in a new LA/or other parts that you don't need in the end as they won't help to solve your problem.

i no longer get the black screen(i cleaned all the points and it seemed to sort this out) the ps2 will boot consitently to the splash screen/browser screen but when i insert any kind of disc i just get disc read error.
as for checking the coils i can do this if anyone knows of a tutorial i can read.
Thanks chris

Do these look ok to you guys?

Yuck. If you have anything below 4 it's crap. This could explain why your screen is black. =) Well looks like you have to change coils or get a new laser unit all together.
