Saving 56kers - Play SOCOM: US Navy Seals with 56K

Big thanks to Eric Sasavicz and JD for this guide.

To get your PS2 online with dial up (those without DSL or cable)

What you need:
-Ethernet card/network card ($15 to $20 bucks)
-hub/switch (cheap ones are 4 port around $40 dollars or so, I bought a 8 port, like $60 I can?t remember,
Because I do a little more crazy networking and stuff but you will only use 2 ports for this setup.)
-2 network cables 1 short one 1 as long as you need to reach your PS2

1) Just install Ethernet card/network card into your computer.
(Most computers that are cable/DSL ready have this in already.)

2) Enable internet connection sharing

3) Run a network cable from the network card in your computer to the hub/switch
(Short cable because you can just set your hub/switch on top of your tower like me)

4) Another network cable from the hub/switch to the PS2 network adaptor.
(I ran 50 footer into the basement from my entertainment room to the front den/computer room)

5) We had to put the IP address from my computer into the PS2 network adaptor because you are
Bouncing through the computer to get out to the internet. Once you get to find the
Internet/register it online, (the test to see if it works)

6) Then just logon to the network from the PS2 and then logon to SOCOM and play!

Now there are times, when you will lag a little just jump rooms till you
Find one that is running better. This depends on who is hosting and how far away they are ECT. ect.
For the best results play whither your time zone. I'm in Ohio so I always play in eastern rooms and
Do just fine. I don?t know but I think that your computer will help you out here too. I have a home
Made computer with a supped up, over clocked processor.
(Just adding this for the guy that will try to do this with a 286 or something lol)

That is all that I can remember. You might even be able to get away with letting the PS2
Network adaptor auto configure itself)

Dude, not everyone has a lot of money, or be able to get broadband because of the area they live in, when you buy a game you want to have fun and enjoy it to the max... some people want to do that to, but they cant because of that...

If you were on their place you would be happy to see this... but it seems like you dont care for other people...

You 56kers don't realize how much you slow the game down for the rest of us.

I've been doing that for awhile.

When I first bought my network adapter I hooked it up to my computer network via an ethernet hub. I only have an external 33.5kb modem but THPS3,THPS4, Frequency, and Twisted Metal Black: Online, all work with little or no lag.

I agree with Sharker on this one....Sony didn't WANT you to play with a 56k for that reason--LAG HELLLL. So, this will just screw up the entire community of SOCOM all for the sake of a couple people clever enough to figure this networking trick out......B.S. NATION

I was just wondering (yes I hate xbox just like most of you) wouldn't the same trick work to get xbox live running. It would be great to slow them f*ckers down.

Just Wondering, why would you have to go through a hub/switch? If you haven't got any other computers to network why not connect straight from your computer to the PS2?

Yeah you could actually used a crossed RJ45 cable to connect the PS2 to the NIC on your PC...

i live in australia and can tell you that most broadband suppliers here are much worse than anything available in the U.S. VERY FEW offer unlimited access and most allow you meager download amounts (ie like 500mb or less!!) and then charge you huge fees for excess downloads - broadband in aus is only for the rich

I play socom almost everynight. playing with 56k shouldn't even be talked about. IF you can't get broadband in your area, i'm sorry but this game was made for broadband only for a reason. With the voice and data stream you are talking at least 15k/sec that is needed. This is faster than any 56k connection that I have ever seen. I'm sure that it probably wouldn't run too bad on ISDN if you had dual channel hookup. But in all honesty the game lags enough by itself and it can't be any fun to play on 56k. You probably move ok to yourself but all others would disappear and reappear. and the game would lock up. I know cause I have seen it. That isn't any way to play a game. the game should be played the way that it was meant to be played. take that as you will.

maybe instead of having a go at us peeps who can't get ADSL or broadband, those who can get it should complain to the companys that install it (like BT) then maybe 56k will be a thing of the past

well worth a try, I complain regular to BT, but I think 400 peeps is wot I need to get to trigger my area, not sure theres 400 peeps in the area :lol :lol I waste my time

I had 56K, back in Puerto Rico, where broadband wanst available, and we all were stuck with dial-up, most people have the same problem. Now I moved to US, and I got Broadband, and I really like it I dont care, and I understand the part that it slows the gameplay to those who pay for broadband access, to play a good quality and fast game. and I woulndt care to play with 56Kers lag or not, is the same shit to me, if it gets really laggy, then I leave and go somewhere else, I dont really care.

Picture yourself (those who have broadband) and realize what would you do if you only could have dial-up for whatever reason... and you want to have fun playing online?

Come on people, I know most of you dont give a damn, but lets be real... Everyone has the right to play. if Sony didnt want it to be dial-up, that's ok they had their reasons. But I dont think is fair either.

I agree on the cheater get rid of them in the wall walking and in the box hiding creeps. But I ask you to find me (Mr. Sasavicz) online sometime and play with me and decide for your self when we are playing. Every person I have told that I am on dial up had no idea till i told them.

Prognon and Asskick.
we tried that,(straight plug in and the little cross box from radio shack), the PS2 Network Adaptor seems to not use the same send/recieve wires the as your computer so we let the hub/switch decipher it.

tredn.
Find me and play with me some time. I dont lag much at all.
I play with cable amd DSL guys that lag more than me.
All the regulars that know me say I move and interact just fine.
the lag is mostly the HOST of them game. If I host it will be HORRID. But if the right person hosts I am just fine.
I guess it is just the cornor of the internet you are in

Liquidvlade Hiraduo.
High five!

See you all online later

Sharker25, gokuguy, PS2BackupWorld, and tredn-
I agree on the cheaters. Get those walk-in-the-wall and hide-in-a-box creeps out. Also I have seen a guy that was invis. Only saw it after i was dead and guns were being picked up and drop by no one! And from what I have found, the lag is cause mostly by the HOST. If i host it will be HORRID yea, but I can play just fine. As a matter of fact, Everyone I have told that I was on dialup was totally suprised. All the regular people that I play with say I interact just fine and have no more lag than a bad cable connection player. I envite anyone to look for me, Mr. Sasavicz, usally in the bottom most US East room and play with me to check it out for yourself.

Cooldy-

Rob6021-
Thats funny! Lets do it!

Prognon and Asskick-
If I remember right we trid that, (plug in directly to network card and the little cross box from radio shack), but it appreas that the Sony Network Adaptor does not use the same wires for send/recieve power/ground ect. as your computer network card. So we let a hub/switch do it for us. (beside my way you are all readdy to just plug in 1 wire when you finally get cable or DSL in your neck of the woods)

WKD-
I agree. And make it a little more affordable. Some of us are not living with mom and dad and letting them pay for all the extra goddies.

Liquidvlade Hiraduo-
High five!

Catch some of you online.
Later Mr. S

56k dialup help file addition

I forgot to mention it in my original post but, it is proly a no brainer here, I always turn off all instant messengers, web pages, and any other bandwith using programs (like weatherbug, downloading/updating something. kazaa or any other open file sharing stuff) so that the PS2 is the only thing getting all you bandwith.
Also I have windows XP and it almost always connects over 50K.

I am going to go play now later

This is bull and 56kers should be banned from playing socom online. The game needs lots of speed to be able to play and 56kers ruin the fun for everyone else which makes it kinda like cheating. It doesnt matter anyways becasue their going to update it to show each persons ping in each room so admins can set it up to autoban anyone with a 150+ ping. If you want to play online get high speed! if you cant get it well too bad you dont play online!! thats one thing I like about the xbox
