Not at all. That FTP server has in itself nothing to do with the HDL downloads. Starting it was only suggested as a way to 'kickstart' those parts of the networking drivers that were somehow 'forgotten' in the new hdld_svr version.
While that is a serious omission that needs to be corrected in future releases, it doesn't invalidate the game installation speed improvements.

Perhaps if someone is bored they can make a small shell program that will start ftp and then boot hdld_svr.elf so that 0.9 can be easily started with one click through uLe.

You can achieve almost the same effect by linking "MISC/PS2Net" to the "Default:" entry in the main uLE config screen, and setting the "Startup Settings..." / "'Default' Timeout:" to 0 seconds.
That will cause the uLE FTP server to be launched ASAP in the uLE booting, so that the network drivers are already active if/when you choose to launch hdld_svr.
The only drawback is that you will then have the FTP server running in the background even when you don't intend to use any networking. But that will of course be terminated again if you launch any ELF that performs IOP reset, such as SMS or another instance of uLE (with different CNF).

That's not what I meant dlanor! What I was implying was that you are doing two things to get the hdl_dump started. You are starting FTP & then launching the hdl_dump server. This is what I mean by defeating the purpose so maybe I didn't use a good choice of words. Thanks!

I just tried starting PS2Net first and then launching 0.9.0 but it still won't let me connect. The PS2 will not reply to a ping from the GUI so something is still not right. When I go back and try using 0.8.6 hdl_dump and 0.8.5 server it works perfectly. I tried adding UDP port 12345 to my port forwarding in my router as the readme says to but it does nothing.

I'm pretty sure nothing has changed in terms of command usage so 0.9.0 should be compatible already. I think the major changes involved speed upgrades and the addition of copying an entire drive (this can still be used by adding any task to the queue and manually creating the command for drive copy). I couldn't get 0.9.0 to connect even when I attempted to start ps2net beforehand.

I haven't been able to connect with 0.9.0 either so I'm sticking to 0.8.6.

Haven't been on the forums in a long while, just wanted to bring this thread back from the dead. Is hdl_dump still around?

Yep and no one uses the 0.90 version as it's still buggy. everyone basicly reverted back to the 0.86 hdl_dumx and 0.85 svr.
