Its in the ESR public beta sticky.

I keep getting an error message "no udf descriptor"
another question is, for a mds and iso pair, can i delete the mds file and just burn the iso? or is the mds file needed for something?

You're trying to patch backups of CDs, aren't you? Sorry, the patcher and ESR do not support CDs.

No. The ESR method of tricking the PS2 into allowing access to a burned game disc can only be applied to DVD discs, since the trick makes the CDVD mechacon 'believe' that the disc is a DVD-Video movie. But there is no way to make it accept a CD as such a movie, since the basic media type is wrong.

AFAIK the mds file serves no real purpose for PS2 backups.

for multilayer backups (dvd9), is the mds file needed as it contains the layerbreak info?

Yes it is needed for Dual layer backups. You select the .mds with Imgburn.

You can convert the CD into a DVD. http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast...r-esr-use.html
However, some games are harder to convert than other.

Ooops! My bad, sorry.
I didn't even think of DL backups, since I never burn such.
Those discs are still outrageously priced.
At my regular supplier:
Verbatim 4x DL DVD-R discs cost 30 SEK per 1
Verbatim 16x non-DL DVD-R discs cost 345 SEK per 100
I could accept a price twice as high as the non-DL discs, since that matches the on-disc storage space, but a price factor of 8.7 is just too much.
Best regards: dlanor

It would be cute to tell us how much is that in $ or euros
Anyway, yeah they are expensive here too. I payed 10 Lei (4.5 $) for 2 discs, and they are not worth it! That's why I didn't respont to the DL Layer thread. I was out of discs and I bought anymore DL's it was like buyng the game again!

Ok well here I can get Verbatim 8.5GB 2.4x (Up to 8x) DVD+R DL, 20 pack for $1.75 each
or I can get
Verbatim 8.5GB 8x (Up to 10x) DVD+R DL, 15 pack for $1.99 each
So really isn't expensive at all. It is of course way more than I pay for Normal DVD which is like .30 cents or less.
Yes I am curious as to how much dlanor price is in Dollars

I'm not sure about the current exchange rates, but 1 € is a little more than 10 SEK.
The supplier I buy from (wesellcd.com) also takes payment in other currencies, and their euro prices are 2.90 € for the single DL disc I mentioned earlier and 33.00 € for the pack of 100 non-DL discs.
Edit:
DL DVD+R discs like windrider42 mentioned seem even more expensive, especially in small quantities.
A single disc of the same type he named costs 4.00 €, and closely similar types cost 16 € for a 5-pack and 27 € for a 10-pack.
Best regards: dlanor

Yes that is quite expensive then isn't it.
I can well understand why you don't buy them.

for dual layer games, the ESR release thread says to patch them with toxic patcher, and then with dvdpatch. Is toxicpatcher 1.0 the latest version? And is dvdpatch available anywhere? I tried searching but I guess the name is too generic.

The Toxic Dual Layer Image Patcher v1.0 is the latest that I know of.
The ESR patcher is in the ESR public beta sticky in the Freevast section.

oh, so the program "dvdpatch" is actually the ESR patcher?
and there is an error message in the toxic patcher saying the iso is not dual layer, although its 6.19 GB?

Yes the ESR disc patcher is I guess what some may call the dvd patcher.
Do you have the .mds file also, then make sure to click on that file when browsing for the file to patch with Toxic Dual layer patch
