i have a few questions
1. what happened to freevast?
2. what is difference between free mcboot, and ESR?
3. can the memor32 memory card with the memento firmware work as a way to boot from a cd?

1. Free MC Boot (FMCB) is freevast. the name freevast was shed a while back since the official freevast never happened and since this project was independant of that one, it was best to rename it.
2. FMCB is the hack/exploit that allows homebrew to be booted from the memory card. ESR is a homebrew that allows patched backup games to be played with no swapping.
3. what the f**k? That question has absolutely no bearing or relevance to your other ones. More or less it's pulled out of thin air.

ok, I think i get it now. freemcboot is needed to run ESR, which is used to run backups.
i'm trying to to install freemcboot and already have the memor32 memory card with the memento firmware. I was wondering if this could be used to boot from a cd. otherwise, i'll have to get an action replay.
on a side note, the memor32 with memento required you to patch your games, and then burn them. does ESR use the same patcher?

We dont really support Memor32/memento too much, since its an over priced way to do what Free McBoot does for free.....and much more effeciently.
Your better off just formatting that Memor32 card and installing Free McBoot on it for a better reliability with homebrew apps.
EDIT:
Ahh...ya posted as i did....

If you have a USB stick, just run the Free McBoot installer from it. Currently FMCB 1.6 doesnt support CD Installing {just realized this} and will not install anything from the disc to the BOOT folder on the MC.
You can install the basic Free McBoot loader, but it wont have any apps to run, so you would still need to use a USB device to copy the apps over to the MC manually.
ESR has a much better patcher than memento.

I can install freemcboot directly to the memor32? does ESR and memento use the same patcher?

No, ESR has a much better patcher than has been improved for better compatibility now.

1. FreeVast was announced as a hack (reversing and decrypting), while some vidz could be found on youtube, before "a hacker crew" comes up with Memento especially for the Memor32-MC.
The project is called so here also,...
But it differs in the point, which started this project.
Bootleg said it already,...
2. There is no "difference". These a 2 parts of the "FreeVast"-Project here on PS2-Scene and Metagames.
FMCB is the evolved FreeVast/"Free-OSDatel"-Hack (which only started an ELF from MC).
FMCB has more features, like rejecting to a custom-hacked OSD/or non-hacked OSD, start ELFs (hacked OSD) and ESR-Disc through the OSD directly (with external ESR.ELF. Comes in next release,...), (Disc-)Fastboot, Buttonlaunch, but still with the Auto-Launch-ELF/Autoboot-ELF-Support.
Some options are supported hardcoded (if no Config-File is present) and some features need a CNF.
ESR is intended to run burned (and patched) DVD's, or grant other applications, to have access to these patched DVD-Rs.
ESR has a higher compatibility than, Memento.
It seems, it even have a higher compatibility, than HDL.
The patching for Memento and ESR-Discs is the same,...
(Edit: Like JNABK said,... The ESR-Patcher"s" are better.)
3. Well,... It could load burned and patched discs, like ESR,...
Memento has his own GUI-Replacement (and could start external ELFs).
FMCB has the OSD-Hack and still could start external ELFs,... ^^

why does the website say you can boot from cd if freemcboot 1.6 doesn't support it?

I only found out recently that it doesnt support copying files placed in the INSTALL folder, but it doesnt do a basic install of the FMCB launcher. You can create a RESCUE.ELF {of uLaunchelf} and put it on a USB stick and manually copy those files to the folders on the MC. This is still useful to those who can run a bured disc, but can run a file from a USB device. Such as was the case with older modchips that only booted a backup disc and nothing else. These modchips might work just fine with Free McBoot without causing any problems, but this isnt documented due to lack of reports..
I will ammend the CD tutorial to reflect this or just take it offline, as the recent tests for the next release do install correctly with a CD installation.

I'm not quite sure what you mean here.
Of course you can boot original CD games on a console with FMCB, just as you can on a console without FMCB. Using FMCB does not change the compatibility of the console to any discs it can normally be used with.
If you worried about what JNABK said in a recent post, he only meant that the installer for FMCB does not do its job right when that installer is run from a CD. This has nothing to do with what FMCB itself supports once it has been correctly installed.

i already understood what he meant, but thank you for clearing it up a little more . So from what I read, I can wait for the next version of fmcb, and install it via cd with memor32 or use action replay now and install it.

Eh? Again I find it hard to understand you.
memor32 has nothing to do with CD's in any way.
A CD will be bootable with memor32 only if it was bootable without memor32.
And the same goes for FMCB as well.
Possibly you were thinking about the possibility of using memor32+Memento or FMCB+ESR to boot a burned CD-R disc on an otherwise unmodded console. But that is unfortunately impossible.
The DVD-Video patching trick used to boot DVD-R discs with memor32+Memento or FMCB+ESR can only work on a DVD disc, never on a CD disc.

yes, but you will have a while to wait...we are not in any hurry to release yet another beta version, but would rather it be more of an "official" release

Yep, you can use that now and it works just fine.

i was thinking of using memor32+memento to boot a cd which would install fmcb and esr. but I guess that's impossible?
doesn't memor32 bypass the protection? or does it only run commercial backups?

If you have a different MC you plan to iinstall to, then yes you should be able to use Memor32 as it iis advertised to work, but i cant confirm what it is able to run, as i dont have one. You can even use Memor32 MC to 'store' the files to copy over to the Free McBoot MC after the install is done, using uLaunchelf....or the Memor32 MC if it has this ability to copy files and not just saves.

There is no such thing as a 'Commercial' backup. A backup is a disc YOU burn files to a blank disc from your PC. Any Commercial discs are pressed and should run without any help from Memor32/memento software.

Yes, that is impossible.

The real 'bypassing' is done when you patch a DVD-R disc with the Memento patcher, or the similar patcher for ESR. That modifies the disc so that the CDVD processor (aka: mechacon) 'believes' that the disc is a DVD-Video movie, and therefore allows the normal PS2 processors to access the data from the disc. But in order to make these processors read the real bootable disc data instead of the fake DVD-Video junk some additional runtime patches are needed, and that is handled either by memor32+Memento or by FMCB+ESR.
However, there is no way ever to make the mechacon believe that a CD is a DVD-Video movie, no matter how that ISO is patched, and that is why it is impossible to use this method for CD-R discs.

No, the same thing can be done for homebrew stuff too. But only on DVD discs, never on a CD.
In any case, the current installer will not work right when run from a CDVD disc of any kind, so using memor32+Memento to install it that way will not work.
Hmmm...
I wonder what would happen if one used memor32+Memento to boot uLE, and then used uLE to copy a complete FMCB installation package to the memor32 card. Thereafter moving that card to MC slot 2, inserting a normal memory card in slot 1, and finally (still with uLE running) launching the FMCB installer from slot 2 to install FMCB on the normal card in slot 1.
I suppose that too might fail, if the current installer assumes that it must be running from mass: (presumably what caused install from CD/DVD to fail). But for a future version this could be yet another working installation method.

ok, I guess I'll use the action replay way to install it. thanks for all your help guys, this was so confusing at first.
by the way, i'm not very good at understanding how the ps2 works, but couldn't you pad the cd and burn to dvd and run it?

This is a common way to run homebrew apps made for a CD by adding a 1.5GB worth of "dummy" files and burning to a DVD.
But if you have AR Max and a USB stick, that would probably be less work and waste of discs that you would only use once for the install.
