ESR Patching

I would like to know briefly, what is the difference between MementoDiscPatcher0.9e and ESR Disc Patcher v0.24? I have been using ESR but reading threads most people are using Memento's. Also, if possible I would like to locate the exe for Memento's patcher since I have been all over looking for it. Thanks.

The main difference is that the former is part of a commercial package, while the latter is not, but is a freeware program written by ffgriever and released in these forums.

Though they have no code in common, they both do exactly the same thing.

It was the first one available, and most people are creatures of habit...
But there is no reason known to me why anyone should prefer the commercial program.

I'm not sure if posting it here would be allowed, since it is part of a commercial product. Copyrighted stuff is normally taboo in these forums. But if you have ffgriever's program, then you have no need for the other one.

Er, is Memeneto really a comercial product? I know it was designed specifically for the Memor32, but it was always free to download and not technically associated with Memor32 aside from a few rumours.

I have to agree as the memento firmware is free to download and it only says that the memor32 is the only mc to date to work with their firmware.

I just used it all the time to begin with as I have memor32 cards.

Once they made the ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a I use it now all the time as it also has the capability to unpatch if you wish.
Its a good program.

@jeremy_mccurdy & windrider42:
I guess you're right, and the Memento stuff is not 'officially' part of the commercial package, though it was definitely developed for that package and nothing else. I'm personally convinced that there is even more to the connection than that, such as having the same people behind the development, though that has to remain mere speculation.

However, I'm not at all sure that the Memento stuff is truly free (as in free for anyone to do what they want with), as releasing something free of charge is not necessarily the same thing as releasing it as real freeware. The ones who made it do own the copyright, and if they don't want it to be used with ESR, they do have the right to forbid such use.

The patcher by ffgriever, on the other hand, was made for use with ESR, so that its legitimate use for ESR can never be questioned. And since the source code is released anyone with programming skills can modify it if/when/as neded.

Best regards: dlanor

It'd really help if the memento team came out of whatever cave they were in and answered a question or two every now and then.

You're right though, if it absolutely came down to it and for some reason the memento team had some problem with people using their patcher for ESR then there could be some issues, still that's an awul big if especially considering they've apparently abandoned their project, or at least gone on one hell of a vacation.
