What are UMD filetypes?

I'm having a guess here but I'm assuming it's got to do with games that have PSP to PS2 connectivity. I've seen .UMD filetypes on some PSP games. I also don't know if Open Season does have PSP to PS2 connectivity but i guess you can see if some other PS2 games that have PSP connectivity such as Jak X or Pro Evolution Soccer 5 have .UMD files on them.

Maybe it's a universal image for both PSP and PS2?
