Not everyone has controllers made w/o analogs (but designed to bypass analog checks and passes off as DS2) So a ARMAX or HDL patch is in order.
evilryu:
it was the digital controller, not analog. It pops an error saying I need to plug in a Dual Shock 2

But it works flawlessly with Toxic OS no special controllers right?
Playstation 3 | Version 1 | 20GB Model
Playstation 2 | Version 7 | Crystal Chip 1.2 | HD Loader v0.8b | 120GB HD

Well obviously there are two solutions to that dilema. Either wait an unknown time for armax/hdl patch which may or may not come into fruition or shell out the extra 3-4 dollars for an old psx digital pad for a sure fix to play now.

update:
tried PS1 controller, popped up an error that it needed a Dual Shock 2. On the way to 1st battle, tried to disable the analog, no go. Tried to insert a PS1 controller, error popped up. Seems like you can't play this on HDloader w/o having a PS2 controller that doesnt have analog support.
DIGITAL PS1 CONTROLLER DOES NOT WORK!! You need a digital PLAYSTATION TWO controller. Unfortunately, none were made except for specialized joysticks and pads such as the Street Fighter Anniversary controller.
edit:
Let me get this clear. Do you use the PSX pad to boot the game from HDL or from the New Game/Continue/Settings screen?
edit2:
vague ass mofos, I went and read PS2HD and there was an exact flowchart to follow and NONE OF YOU had even made it clear.
1. While PS2 is OFF, Plugin your Digital PS1 controller
2. Turn PS2 ON, and load up HDL
3. Start the game
4. When prompted, plugin your Dual Shock 2 controller.
i'm going to try it now, gonna see if it works. And shame on you jerks that didn't make it clear in the beginning, ESPECIALLY for those of you that knew and posted on PS2HD.

Sorry, had I not been at work, and seen your replies I would have promptly told you every minute step on what I did since my initial post was too vague I guess.
really though...I was able to figure out how to do it exactly after only 2 trial and errors
Gratz on finally getting it to work though.

How did they came to this trick , aren't you curious of that?

Someone probably had the special pad on the PS2 to play fighting games and forgot to take it out before putting VP2. He must've had the game working on his first try but not on others, so he probably tried to see what he did wrong and found out about the pad thing.
Anyway, I wonder if a patch to fix this would fix any other incompatible games...

ok I said I was finished with this thread but I can still answer some questions so I guess I will.
The way they came up with this method is that when you load a dvd-r (thru swapmagic/zoneloader/cogswaploader) or a game from HDD, it "resets" so to speak, so whatever drivers (including controller drivers) are gone. If you notice, when you boot any game through these methods, the analog turns off, then turns on.
I don't know the exact problem but the above seems to be a part of the issue. Also, I remember a game that needed to be booted like this, it was one of my old old games but I forgot exactly which one, I think it was Tekken Tag Tournament, I don't know for sure until I retry which is unlikely since I don't want to put an effort into something we all know now.
