Valkyrie Profile –
It has been quite long time since VP can be started from HDD. Unfortunately it is still [rather awkward] problem with it cause the game needs a trick with changing PSX controller to Dual Shock when it boots.
I don't know many things in this matter9(i mean structure of PS2 games ) but is it really hard to create some kind of patcher or fix which could fix mentioned problem once and for all? Or maybe there are some more importants things to do for PS2 hackers.
I still hope it will happen one day (just wonder when)
well so far there is no patch for this one but its not harder also to change psx controller to DS ..so since this trick working i dont think anyone will make a patch or a fix ..
Sorry for being slow here but may I ask what that is supposed to mean?

I wouldnt expect a patch after this length of time..
yeah sorry for confusing you i meant by DS Dual Shock ..
well i think as far as there is a solution for a specific game like a Patch or a fix or a trick they will stick with that one ..
i still find the reason for that behavior unclear. did somebody investigate it deeper and can provide a valid explanation?
i'm tinkering with game's disk trying to figure out how the toc works, and attempting to extract and unpack various files (the toc seems to be in the same place as in star ocean 3 and most other tri-ace games, so at least i have someting to compare it against).
i think i found the main executable (the real one) somewhere on the disk, but it seems to be packed and apparently is encrypted.
for now i'm stuck struggling with a ton of crappy hex editors on linux ;-) can't anybody come up with a decent one?
The game has heavy anti-mod and anti-cheat protection.
When you don't use the workaround of controller swap, and use the harddrive, it triggers the protection.
Once this protection is triggered, your save is flagged as bad if you save after tripping it, and will FREEZE FOREVER. PERIOD. Even from the disc. No one knows how to fix a save flagged as bad.
If you get even one freeze, go back to playing from disc, and see if you still get the freezes. If so, you have to start all over.
Note that is is very possible to randomly have the battle not freeze. and then save with the protection tripped. Pirates beware!
The game does NOT have any code that is specifically against hdloader. HOwever, it performs a extensive integrity check of the IOP on boot as part of it's anti-cheat, and the presence of the extra hdd emulation module trips the check.
I always use only my backups(I don't use my originals at all)and that game is working without any problems(except the damp "Reading Disk" red screen but recently I clean and adjust my laser and now it's working perfectly).I have it on my HDD too and I don't have any problems after I start my PS2 with PS1 controller and switch to the PS2 controller when the game ask for it.
