when you patch a pal game to play on a ntsc system why is it always misaligned? is there any fix to this? what causes it?
There are a few patchers like that that come with a "y-fix" that allows you to adjust the y screen position (up and down). Unfortunatly there is no magic number so you'll probably have to try it a few times before you get it aligned correctly.
the one i have seems to do the y fix by itself, but it doesn't work too well..
edit:: i can change it...I assume higher number is higher alignment and lower is well...lower?
You are PROBABLY right, however I'm really not sure. Try reading some of the documentation that came with it, they might mention that. I know if you mess with it a few times you'll be able to get it near perfect.
There is a new patcher recently released, that reportably does a lot better job than the older patchers and along with the screen being centered properly by default, also keeps audio/video in sync and can change the colour mode also.Supposably the patches work by patching the ps2 kernel in memory rather than patching the elf itself, which is why it should dodge all centering issues, although as you have probably guessed I have yet to try it out myself. Also I am hoping that similar methods can be used to force vga and 480p without requiring an o2mod chip,as I believe that the o2mod itself uses a similar method to what this patcher does (although I may be misinformed here)
Here is the link (get the vlink file at top of page) :

Ok...I've tried some stuff with this new patch and those are the results I got...(PAL > NTSC)
1)Kingdom Hearts (PAL - French) "Error : unable to patch" (:()
2)ZOE : Anubis Special Edition (PAL) screen aligment pretty good...color mode NTSC...60Hz ? ( huh...doesn't look faster than the PAL one, same black border too  )
3)Metal Gear Solid 3 (PAL) (unable to patch in with the previous version of the patcher) screen aligment pretty good...color mode NTSC...60Hz ? ( huh...doesn't look faster than the PAL one, same black border too  )
4)Final Fantasy X (PAL - French) screen aligment pretty good...color mode NTSC...ok...now I got il...this IS NTSC 50Hz !!! (belive me or not but it exists)
the black screen border ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS FOR THE PAL VERSION...
so no 60Hz (for me, at least) with this patch...assuming NTSC has poor quality display copared to PAL...what's, the big idea, anyway ? :p (i'll go and check http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ps2_pal2ntsc to find some more about this...) (I want to play ZOE2 SE and DMC1 60Hz :p)
The reason it's always misaligned is because the PAL video standard uses an image composed of 625 scanlines, whereas the NTSC standard only uses 525. Because of this, there will always be a little bit of the image on the top or bottom of the screen that's going to get cut off. A PAL video stream is simply "too tall" to properly fit onto an NTSC display. So although you can patch a PAL game to work on NTSC systems, it'll never display perfectly.Quote:

Correct me if i am wrong but from your tests you were able to play PAL games
in a PAL console and a NTSC TV - that's why you had to patch - in color,
right? Or you just convert them to try?
The purpose of 2005 patcher is to have full screen and the game will show as
the original video version. Previous patchers worked like this:
ADR patcher (from PAL to NTSC): the game will be faster because PAL is 50 Hz
and NTSC is 60 Hz; color; the screen is not centered (and sometimes the game
does not allow any adjustment or when it allows it is not enough); very high
patching sucess rate.
Jayteemaster ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix : the game will be faster because PAL is 50
Hz and NTSC is 60 Hz; color; the screen is centered (the vertical position
at least); the image is big (in high) than the screen!; has a PAL/NSTC
selector; some times patching causes the game not to boot.
Jayteemaster ps2 video mode fixer 2005 (from PAL to NTSC): intended to play
the game as the original; the game will not be faster because it will be
still at 50 Hz; color; the screen is centered and fits the screen!. If you
just want the extra speed then this patcher is not for you!
The PAL60 video mode is just like the PAL version except it works at 60 Hz
instead of 50 Hz (so game will be fastewr). The ps2 video mode fixer 2005
(from NTSC to PAL) will also make the games work at 60 Hz but the screen
vertical resolution will be still NTSC - which is lowe than PAL ( and there
is nothing to do about it except to get the PAL version if you want the
extra resolution).
So,
for NTSC to PAL at 60Hz use: Jayteemaster ps2 video mode fixer 2005.
for PAL to NSTC at 50Hz use: Jayteemaster ps2 video mode fixer 2005.
for PAL at 50 Hz to PAL at 60Hz use: ADR patcher (from PAL to NTSC) and then
apply Jayteemaster ps2 video mode fixer 2005 (from NTSC to PAL).
Maybee the screen positioning procedure you describe can be done but would
require extra work. And if manage to do the proper job just by adding an
offsets to the position why have trouble ...
Posts should be in English just because this group is intended to be global
and the best language for that purpose is English.

if a PAL is 60hz to start with, why convert it to 60hz?Quote:

Yes and no, you'll never be able to align pal games perfectly becuase of the screen size. However, with a little experimentation you can get just a little from the top and bottom cut off and the game will be still very playable. Since you've had no problem actually patching the games before just mess around with the y fix untill you find a screen position that gives you all the information you need. Some games have information on the top of the screen while others have it at the bottom. Most games have a little "dead" space at either the top or the bottom that you can usually do without.
