I used DVDdecrypter to make a DVD9 iso of MGS2: Substance and moved it to my HDD via HDL_Dumb. I'm using HDadvance 3.0 (HDL 7c equivalent I think)
Do I need any modes to run this, including the Datefix 3 (mode 5) needed for MGS2: Sons of Liberty?

first, I believe you have to flatten the iso
I used HDL0.8b insall the game directly by ps2,No patch, No mode, it works. I have JApanese version (DVD9), I think US or PAL should work either.
I confirm .The PAL works without modes
Create ISO of MGS2S with DVD Decrypter then transfer the ISO using WinHIIP..that's itOriginally Posted by topazbullet
Or you can install the game using your PS2 with HDLoader v0.8b...

You can get a ready made "shrink kit" which makes a flattened and shrinked iso here:

Use mode 2 with HDLoader 0.8b.
Sorry for reviving this old topic, but I can't get "MGS2: Substance (US-NTSC)" running on HDL 0.8c (using "hdldumb 0.86" for the transfer). I tried both "Imgburn" and "DVD Decrypter" but in both cases I just get a black screen. -_-
Is there possibly any option that has to be enabled in Imgburn/DVD Decrypter?
Or rather does anyone know what exactly goes wrong with me? x__X

use WinHIIP 1.7.6 instead of hdldumb and see if its gunna work or not .
O___O It works! *rejoices*
But why is that? Is MGS 2: Substance "incompatible" with hdldumb? *scratches his head*
