How Are These Patches Applied?

I'm new to this all, and really don't understand how this works. When a patch comes out for a game like God of War, how do I get the patch onto my hard drive?

I'm thinking it has to do with setting up the FTP server on my PS2 and then uploading it from my computer to the PS2 via LAN? Or does it involve USB? Or do I put the file on my memory card like I did with the initial exploit install? Some help would be greatly appreciated..
