So it's been a year and a half since this problem was discovered, I'm wondering if anyone has found a feasible solution for it yet or any idea what might be causing the problem so that it can be resolved?

Just bought Cold Fear (US-NTSC) and Valkyrie Profile 2. Expected a controller issue with VP2, but weirdly enough, it loads up perfectly fine without any such issues. Cold Fear, however, says an analog controller needs to be attached, which there is: my original Dual Shock 2 I got with my PS2.

A little research has found many posts going back to last year, with other people experiencing this issue, and a couple "solutions":

    - Use an unpatched version of HDL, because the time patch screws it up.

Hardly a feasable solution now that the mode list has been expanded internally. Each time switching back and forth between versions, you have to wait 5+ minutes for a partition rescan (especially if, like me, you've got a 500gb HD packed with over 125 games.) As well as losing both LBA48 support (ie. cannot even access game on drive) and all the new mode settings from the re-creation of the new HDL config file.

Turning Time Patch 2 & 3 on at the same time is supposed to set the time settings back to the unmodified HDL's mode, but this, unfortunately, doesn't work either as far as getting the game to continue.

    - Launching HDL.ELF from PS2Menu-K is said to work.

PS2Menu-K also takes forever scanning all the partitions on boot and even creates a useless 512mb one on the HD. I cannot test this to even see if it's true, however, as the program stops loading up entirely after loading the CDVD driver.

    - Launch HDL from uLaunch 3.55.

Old version with I cannot find, and based on uLaunch's changelog, has bugs which were ironed out in newer version. I'm using uLaunch 4.07 as my boot file, however, and there's still a problem.

    - Launch HDL from KeyLauncher 5b3.

A version of an abandoned launcher that's known for having a bug that'll render your HD useless? Not even gonna try it.

I know Cold Fear isn't as high a profile game as VP2 and FFXII, where people are rushing to fix the CF controller problem like they are the issues in the Square games, but it'd be nice to get it working none-the-less.
