You need a ps1 disc because the buffer overflow is in the routine in the ps1driver that parses title.db therefore you must activate the ps1 driver with insertion of a ps1 game. furthermore it has to be in the title.db.

Is it possible to run the exploit without a PS1 disc? Reason is that my PS2 has stopped reading cd's even though it reads dvd's well enough.
    I have a version 5 PS2 with a messiah modchip.

The only way to load the PS1 driver to trigger the exploit is to load a PS1 game. So the answer is an obvious No.

Plus the PS1 cant read DVD's so no PS1 DVD games were ever made (naturally).

Hey No one answered my perfectly good Question.
Why does the ps1 Driver need to read title.db on the memory card?
What would a normal title.db contain? What would it do? How could it be changed?

Why does all of this really matter anyway???
You can get a used PS1 disc for under $5 these days, you're not exactly breaking the bank...
The exploit is a nice thing to have installed...go do it...

actually there is ps1 disc for $0.99..... you can use demo disk too.

Anyways if you have a modchip why not use a cd of hd loader. I also think there is a DVD of hdloader out there as well. Your ps2 plays burned copies right?

This whole exploit thing is mainly for people with no modchips or anything. Also people with matrix infinity use it as well since they need no disk at all. They can boot from the MC.

Basically in english language regarding the exploit:
You load some files that you want to run from MC (in this case HD loader) then you have a file (title.db) that has your ps1 disc id of your choice (trigger disk) that tells the ps2 to load your MC files when that ps1 disc is read on your ps2. Your ps2 functions as normal but once you put that ps1 game it automatacillty trigger the MC boot.
    unmodded v10 PS2 NTSC
    120 GB Maxtor Hardrive
    HDL exploit (Key Launcher)
    PS1 game: Twisted Metal 3
    PS2 remote ( w/ reset button )
