    no need for rail.
Throw the HDD in your PS2.
    Connect Network adapter.

Final Fantasy 11 did come with a hdd [40gb] and from what i know there isnt a way to save game files to the hard drive. [Dunno where they sell it anymore] It wouldnt make sense since the ps2 is reading an iso image from the hard drive already how could it run two processes on one disc. sorry dude but i wish it could be done too.

P.S. About the rail from the post directly above you the rail isnt really needed i mean all you do is connect it to the network adapter and stick it up the arse of the ps2. To get games on the hard drive you need to attach it into the computer as a slave drive and copy the disk images you have one the computer usually copied with WinHiip or HDDump [sp]

You don't need to use the official hard drive though I have heard that some of the HD games (which basically means...XI) check to see if you are running an official drive. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

And, as was said before, you can't use a HD as a memory card, although you can copy saves from your card to the hard drive as a backup, much in the same way you can backup PSX saves on a PS2 card.

Unless you're running homebrew stuff or HDL all a PS2 hard drive is really going to do for you is make your PS2 heavier.

i plan on using homebrew stuff & hdl, and i am a newbie on ps2 (just got a ps2 fatty from a friend of mine...he could not find the ff 11 hdd...only the network adaptor)

when i slide in the hdd, there was considerable space on the sides & i know that hdd is better when it is fixed. i was worried about breaking when i take my ps2 to friend's house...but i think i should disassemble when i move around with it

btw, is there any advantage of using the sony's official hdd over the regular hdd other than playing final fantasy 11?

Well if you want to be cautious about it then you could dissamble it from moving it around. but it should stay secure i dont have a network adapter but i know that itll be latched in like a hard drive in a computer. [I dont screw in my hard drives since i exchange them often. ] Since there isnt to much space to move it around it shouldnt crack but it could do something....maybe. Depends on how you handle it. Well i dont believe there is a disadvantage except Gigabytes size. Well money might be a thing too. how much money you have and how much space you want all spells out how much GBs you can get.

    let's be clear.

you don't *need* the rails to install an hd in the ps2. it will fit and operate fine.

if you want, you can obtain the rails, make your own, or use cardboard to make the hd more secure in the slot so it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

without the rails, if you carry around your ps2 in a backpack for instance, i've had a time where the hd became disconnected since i don't use rails.
