Does it put drivers/something on your memory card like the network adaptor disc? Is this how the PS2 recognizes offical HDD? Is there something on the HDD itself that is recognized? Can we have someway of getting these files? I have a Maxtor HD instead of the offical PS2 hard drive. I wish to find someone who might share what files are on the offical PS2 HDD install disc, so there might be a way for the PS2 to detect all HD instead of just the offical one. I was thinking there might be a way to transfer those files on to the memory card by the Independance Xport expolit or something. Then we could put saves and such on the harddrive. Anybody got an ideas?

I think it is a modified firmware on the HDD itself, not neccessarily files on the HDD. Especially since you can not use the Utility Disc that comes from Sony to format a non Sony HDD last I remembered.

I find it most fortunate since I have a dms3 modchip.. runs just like an official HDD

What about hex-editing the boot area of the hdd. I know nothing about these things, but I opened my PS2 drive in Hex Workshop, & there's info there about $ony.

oh and i forgot to say that the ps2 hdd disc also flashes the bios i think, in order for the browser to also see the hdd and explore the contents on it.

If so.. when are we going to see ''dashboards'' (to compare to a xbox) with a nicer gui than the original ps2?? would it be feasible??

Ive always pondered this as well.. Is there simply no way to flash the bios on the ps2 as you can with the xbox? M$' problem was with using a PC board for their hardware.. which had a flashable chip on it.. all ya had to do was bridge two points on the board..

Does anyone here have the official HDD? Does it give any clues on what is being installed?
I doubt it's the HDD' s firmwire being flashed. If that were the case wouldn't it possibly cause problems on non official hdd's? Especially the ones that are not 40gigs?
