You can also use the maxdiypower PS2 700XX serials SATA HDL installation kit for external connected SATA HD.
It use the ide port of the v12/v13 and is simply a ide/sata adapter.
I have tested it and it works very well with HDLoader (0.8b+ with v9 and v12/13 Patch).

I own self 2x PS2 Slim with Matrix Infinity and HD Combo and 2x PS2 Slim with Matrix Infinity and the SATA HDL installation kit (all soldered by Gametop.de).

    - PS2 Slim MI 1.93 + HD-Combo black 120 GB IDE HD + 9,2' 16:9 PAL/NTSC LCD
    - PS2 Slim MI 1.93 + HD-Combo white 750 GB IDE HD

The HDL installation kit will like the HD Combe or XCM HD Connect directly soldered to the IDE bus of the v12/13.
From the maxdiypower HDL Kit are an IDE and a SATA version.
But I recommend the SATA version (bigger and cheaper drives).

And read my post again, i said HDLoader and IDE/SATA adapter, so there can not be USB

For hdloader and playing games from harddrive it does not matter which chip you have.
But with the crystal chip you can boot directly an app from memory card without pressing a button on joypad. You can boot tools like ULE (file browser and apps menu/launcher) or hdloader directly.

Heya, I've just installed the sata HDConnect thing from maxDIYpower.. and the PS2 won't recognize the hard drive. I had a professional do the soldering, and I've checked over it all (with a multimeter) and it's 100% perfect. So I'm guessing the problem is that for some reason my hard drive won't work with it. it's a 2.5" drive..called: "Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS Hard Disk Drive, 500GB, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, SATA-2"

Would you be able to tell me which hard drive you have got successful working on it? ..or do you know of any 2.5" sata HDD's that will work with it? thanks..

and the PS2 won't recognize the hard drive.
What do you mean by "The PS2 won't recognise the hard drive" (Could you please be more specific, and tell us how you reached that conclusion)?
What software did you use to try to access the drive?

    If you used HDLoader:

Did you use a modified copy of HDLoader that was meant for v12/v13 PS2s?

The v12/v13 PS2s are missing some registers that HDLoader v0.8c will try to read, and will just fail.
    Unmodified SCPH-77006 with SM 3.6
SCPH-39006 with M-chip modchip, SCPH-10281 NA and refurb Seagate 80GB HDD
SCPH-10000 v1.00 with SCPH-10190 PCMCIA NA and SCPH-20400 HDD unit
    PS2ESDL v0.823B

    Thanks for your response

To be more specific, I tried using:
    - HDLoader
    - OpenPS2Loader
    - HddManager (in uLaunchELF)

All of them could not see the hard drive. I'm unsure what version of HDLoader I'm using, but I got one of the Free MCBoot guys to set up my memory card, so I would assume that it was the version for PS2 slims (my version is SCPH-70002) ..but even if it's not the right version, the other two programs couldn't see it either.

I tried all three programs while the hard drive was formatted as FAT32.. as well as trying it after I had formatted it with the PS2 filesystem (used WinHiip for the formatting)

Anything else you'd need to know please ask, I'm completely stumped with this =/ .. my only thought was that maybe you can't use 2.5" drives, but I can't see why that would make any difference

if you are not sure which hdl patched you are using then make your own HDL and apply patch for v12/13 via HDL-Patch or Grab one on my 4shared link .
