Updating Retail HDLOADER?
Updating Retail HDLOADER? –
First post here, was checking around other random forums for some information and I landed on this site and it seems like it be the best place to get my answer.
I did some searching around on the forums here and couldn't seem to find a direct answer to what I'm looking for perhaps I missed it somehow or maybe its never been discussed because it isn't possible.
Basically I've had the retail version of HDLOADER for quite sometime and I'm use to loading up .ISO's to the hard drive using the method of opening the pc and putting the ps2 drive to slave then sending over the ISO via HDDUMB, but I see there is a networking feature for it where you could upload the game to the PS2 hard drive by ftp (Much like on a modded xbox) avoiding opening your pc all together.
As following the instructions it seems that the retail version of HDLOADER doesn't have any kind of network support with it, but I see there are several updates out that allow you to run it from the memory card (HDLOADER) that does have network support. Can I use my retail HDLOADER to somehow get the hdloader loader memory card exploit to my memory card or do I need to use the basic independence method?
I saw on a few forums that you could use retail HDLOADER to load the exploit but there was no real concrete information on it, thus why I am here and asking and searching for the question.
Again if this has been covered in another topic I apologize, if anyone can please point me into the right direction though, it would be totally appreciated!
if you have the ORIGINAL hd loader version (before they started ripping off patches and re-releasing the discs as updated versions) you can do this:
1) extract the elf file from the disc
2) unpack it with SjUnCRUNCH (you should make a back up of your original uncrunched elf)
3) patch with HDL Patch
finally, do whatever you need with it
if you're gonna put it on your MC, then you should compress it again with ps2packer once you're finished patching it.
if you have some updated patched version like hdadvance or whatever, then you'll probably need to do a google search for the original elf file before you can proceed.
Question: If I were to make an ISO of the disc, extract the ELF file, modify it, and reinsert it using Daemon Tools, would that work the same way as having a patched version of the disc? And would I have to reinstall my games to do this?
IF you can boot CD-R discs, then yes, because what you just described is a way to make a patched version of the disc. But doing it by that method is not what I'd recommend... 'Reinserting' files in an ISO normally requires exactly identical data length, and that means recreating the 'crunched' format etc, even though you have no need for it.

Next you patch it as you currently need it to be, and then you prepare a new boot disc just as you would for any other homebrew ELF you want to run from CD-R. If you're unsure of how to do it, there are tons of tutorials around on this subject, which you can easily find by googling. I mostly use 'cdgenPS2' to make such ISOs, but some people do it with 'Nero'.
No, changing to another ELF does not affect the storage of games on HDD, except when you switch to a different LBA size on a disk larger than 128GB. If the disk is smaller and/or you keep the same LBA size as before, there should be no problem.
And would I have to reinstall my games to do this?

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I A) Do not have a modchip, and B) My PS2 stopped reading PSX games. So does that mean there's no way to use a patched version? I noticed 48bit HDLoader and ToxicOS modes on the new WinHIIP. Do these affect anything?
Original HDLoader won't read ToxicOS partitions i don't think... and does not support 48bit LBA... your only option as i see it is to get Swap Magic... and use that to boot a patched HDLoader disc...
you can make a boot disc that runs "uLaunchELF" and install that to HDLoader using HDL_Dumb (or WinHIIP) then when you start up LaunchELF you can use a digital camera in the USB slot to copy and paste files onto your memory card etc... (such as the HDLoader patched ELF)
i dont think HDLoader will boot up twice (ie... normal HDLoader --> uLaunchElf --> HDLoader 0.7... but i have not really explored the possibility. you might want to try it... (i'd suggest mode 3 on HDLoader and enable 'reset IOP' in LaunchELF) (dont get your hopes up)
