The reason why the HDD will 'never remember' those files is that those files were never written to the physical HDD. Instead they were merely placed in a cache intended for writing to HDD, which never happens if the console is reset at that point. But when the unmount command has been executed you can rest assured that the cache has been flushed, so all files written are safely stored on the HDD.
