TUTORIAL: HDD & Exploit Tools
TUTORIAL: HDD & Exploit Tools –
Happy New Year, and thanks for looking at this... I noticed I had some things to change about the tutorial, so I updated it some.
New Version is 1.43:
-www.PSHD.com is new url for Cricex's compatibility chart
-Added some information about booting the ps2rmp
Ok, I spent quite some time on this, and figured since the data is not completely organized in a way that's easy to follow, i'd make this....
Some credits/thanks go to:
- The scene of course!
- Someone else i'm sure, if i missed u, tell me...
Credits are in the tutorial, but i wanted to make it more public that i couldn't do this entirely by myself.. I just generated the document - many many discussions on late-night IRC is what made this possible..
Oh, and fill out the poll so as a team we can make this better!
IF YOU CHOOSE A POLL SETTING OF LOWER THAN AWESOME, PLEASE INDICATE WHY IN YOUR POST SO WE CAN MAKE THIS BETTER!

My only question is how much of this stuff works without a mod chip?
all of it can work w/o a mod chip providing you get the exploit onto the MC. the method shown here requires you to be able to boot hdloader. using hdloader you can then install an ftp server on your ps2 through execftps. from there you can access everything else like installing stuff to MC to loading exploit from HDD instead of MC to save room. thanks for crediting me gamer
Every last bit of it works without a modchip (verified on a friend's PS2)..
There are many methods in which you boot HDLoader from CD:
Like i stated in the tutorial, I only know about modchips(and the magic3.1 specifically)... so how you boot it, is up for you to find out..
Ok, I've been going through the tutorial step by step. Now everything was working as mentioned, but I hit a little bump. I have my hddloader on a CD. I got HDLD_SVR working through the steps and I tried ripping a game from my PC's CDRom drive and it worked perfect. I got to the point where I have to set up EXECFTPS. I got 0.68 version (the one in your tutorial), and did the following: I made an image using the extracted files (and made sure to set the LBA of SYSTEM.CNF to 12231), and uploaded the image using HDL_Dump onto the HD. Then I rebooted my PS2 and put my HDDLoader CD in the drive. When the menu comes up, I see the games I've ripped and the EXECFTPS image. I select it, and choose play, and it goes to a black screen and nothing happens...
Any ideas ?
underboss: as stated in the tutorial, you'll also want to check for compatibility for the game. If the modes are correct (or if it's compatible at all for that matter), then it should boot fine.
You can also supply compatibility flags here. View this page to determine whether or not your game needs a special mode, or if it will even work at all: hxxp://hdloader.cricex.com/?show=all

Ok, maybe I wasn't clear. The step that I am talking about has nothing to do with game compatibility. This is Phase FOUR in the tutorial where it's showing how to setup ExecFTPS. if you read my previous post, you'll see which step I'm stuck at, but just to make your reading easier, here it is from the tutorial guide:
Once your image is created, simply dump the image to your hard drive using HDLD_SVR (on PS2) and HDL_Dumb (on PC) just like we did in Phase Two. You shouldn?t need any special modes for this image to work.
Once completed, reboot your PS2 and start ExecFTPS from HDLoader. You should be presented with a bunch of text indicating the program?s load sequence.......
At this point when I choose ExecFTPS, I get a black screen.
Hopefully I've clarified it for you. Unless I'm the one that doesn't understand :P
hmmmmmm... yeah i misread your post... sorry, was in a bit of a hurry...
the only things i can suggest are the following:
- check what's in your system.cnf? default stuff i hope..
- make sure than when you upload it to HDLD_SVR, it shows EXECFTPS.ELF in the elf to startup
- have you tried re-uploading it?
sounds strange indeed.. i just tested it on my ps2 - wiped out my hdd (had to anyway, was having problems) and my mem card (i backed up my kl.dat, so i'm good).. just ran through the steps, having no problems.. dunno what to tell you - wish i did.. i'll collaborate with some other minds.... in the meantime, let us know what you do if you solve it!
something i haven't tried yet, but do you have a mem card in the ps2? i know it tries to load config files off it, so it might have problems if a mc isn't detected
Good job KillerSpaz....I will try out a copy of execftps on hdl tommorrow to confirm if it works or not.
I'll be trying all of this out tommorrow. Will give a report from someone who has only been able to install the exploit. (me)
