Yeah, I had a 40GB Maxtor in my PS2 previously, I put it back in my PC and then ran Maxtor's drive formatting utility and formatted it for the PC. WinHIIP also has Erase Drive which may work, but I'm not 100% sure. I'd try that, if it doesn't, just find a drive utility from the manufacturer of your HDD.
I'm using Ontrack disk manager to reformat my Maxtor 60G Hard disc to use as PC Hard disc after I upgrade my PS2 HD Loader HDD to Maxtor 200G
