We all know the PS2 shuts down when reset is pushed if the network adapter/HDD is active, so some people suggested quickly pressing reset twice to reset. That's not a true reset though, that's just turning the PS2 off and back on in a split second. What does everyone here think about this technique? Is it safe to use? Won't it damage anything?

I would probably give it a second until you cut the ps2 back on. The HDD may not like being turned off fast, then turned right back on.

well if you pull the plug when the hd is writing data, that data will be corrupted, and the drive may encounter an error when trying to read that sector again. however, i think the ps2 safely unmounts all fs's when you turn of the ps2 via the standby button (hence the slight delay between you holding the button down, and the ps2 turning off completly)

that is just my guess :P

    [edit:

sorry that wasn't what you were asking was it :P i'm with t0n, i wouldn't force the drive to spin its self up again so quickly. i would wait a second or 2

Maven just a note of warning, I have an old 4 gig HD that I use to mess around with.. and tryed your theary on the quick douple tap... DONT DO IT... It corrupts the game that you where playing after a while and you will be forced to reinstall the game..

Edit: i tryed it agian to see what it would do if I had 2 (or more) games on the HD... Well not surpirising all the games are corrupted and some can not be booted...
Be far worned NOT to douple tap the power button to reset the PS2... Most games will be playable for a short time then crash or freeze..
    later,
    Scooter

The reason the system disables the reset function is to protect the HDD from damage. Trying to bypass the protection with a double-tap allows the damage to happen. It should be common sense not to try to simulate a reset if normal reset is disabled...

the only safe way is to hold the reset button ... the HDD will spin down and the ps2 will shut off afterwards
