Is there anyway to format a unofficial HDD to work with games that use hdd? I only can get my hdd to work with homebrew.

As far as I know there are only two ways to do this - the first being a modchip with "Auto ATAD" patching (this feature should be available on most "modern" chips) and the second being manually patching the ATAD.IRX file for each game you wish to use.

If you want to go down the patching route you can find the file on this page, just look for "Atad.irx File Modification".

EDIT: Unless you have a modchip the drive still won't be visible in the PS2 "Browser" so you'll have to use uLE to manage the game data.

    Regards,

    -Yuki

games use official sony hdd drivers. those drivers verify is you are using official hdd.

you would have to apply atad patch to these games, and then they should work with existing hdd layout imho. i *think* no reformat is necessary, although i'd rather have someone else elaborate on this.

Assuming the drive was formatted with uLE, it should work fine with both homebrew and official software after the patch has been applied. I can't be sure for other methods of formatting but I would imagine if they work for homebrew they should work for games.

No reformatting is required... as long as your disk isn't larger than 137GB.

you wont be able to delete most installed games with the standart ule, as the most official games use password's to protect the partitions.
to delete those games you need to have either hdd-osd or psbbn installed, or hacked-ule will do it too(it can also delete psbbn partitions) :P

I think that uLaunchELF v4.42a already has that limitation removed.

If he has a Sony disk, I remember that uLaunchELF is unable to access my SCPH-20400 HDD unit at all (After I got the Sony HDDOSD installed) - because of a bug in ATAD.IRX that prevents it from detecting that it's a Sony HDD unit (And hence, it doesn't perform the necessary security unlocking process at all).

The limitation was coded into PS2 SDK by Sjeep himself, it has nothing to do with uLE.
    SCPH-10000_GH-001 SCPH-15000_GH-003 SCPH-18000_GH-008 SCPH-30001_GH-005 SCPH-30000_GH-016(V4) SCPH-30001_GH-010(V4)
    2xSCPH-10190, 2xSCPH-10350, 2xSCPH-10280
    "**** j0 hackers!"
