I am trying to help a friend install a HDD to his PS2. I had him set the HDD to "master" mode (no jumpers) and connect it to his computer with a USB to IDE Cable.

The trouble is, WinHIIP refuses to let him select it. It just says "there are no PS2 formatted drives" and won't do anything. No shit! What is the problem?

We made it past that, it seemed he needed to run the program as administrator for it to work. But now there is a new problem. He cannot set the thing to format in 48bit mode (it's a 250 GB HDD). What's wrong?

I am trying to help a friend install a HDD to his PS2. I had him set the HDD to "master" mode (no jumpers) and connect it to his computer with a USB to IDE Cable.
I'm not familiar with WinHIIP, but I know that the following must be met for the IDE HDD to work on the PS2 (Or to be prepared by a program for use on a PS2):

    1. Drive must be set to "Master". I don't think that enable "Cable select" (Or CS) is a good idea. Only set it as "slave" when you are connecting 2 IDE devices along the same IDE cable.

    2. The HDD must have already been partitioned(And most probably FAT32 formatted) by a Windows/MS-DOS compatible software.

    3. Must be FAT32 formatted. Many PS2 tools do not support NTFS. Since your HDD is >32GB, you must use "fat32format" to format the HDD(Since Windows XP won't let you format a HDD>32GB as FAT32).

You havenīt even the choice of 48Bit?!

Donīt you have another OS, to try it with?
There isn't *really* such an option for configuration(The 48-bit access mode is set by the PC's hardware). The 48-bit LBA extension is largely hardware dependent, and most modern software supports it out-of-the-box. Also, OSes as old as Windows 98SE(With the correct patches applied) already support such huge drives(I use an external 3.5in 750GB SATA->USB drive on Win98SE; 2x250GB parts FAT32 formatted, 1x250GB part NTFS).

The "48-bit mode" shown seems to me to format a partition that is >137GB. It's possibly not available as the drive wasn't fully partitioned/the drive was not detected properly (Hence the actual capacity seen by the program is <137GB).

EDIT: I think that the answer is obvious. If the drop down menus on the left configure the sizes of the partitions on the disk, they are <137GB in total. Hence you won't get a "48-bit LBA" format option.

You are connecting this HDD to his PC using a "IDE to USB" adapter/enclosure right? If you are, please make sure that the HDD is powered by it's AC adapter, if any. Also, try to connect it directly to the PC's USB port, and not through a USB hub.

If it's connected by an IDE/ATA-33/ATA-66 cable, make sure that your MASTER/SLAVE jumpers are set properly. Also try changing IDE cables if everything you tried doesn't work.

And the often most overlooked issue: Windows did not reconise your device properly. Make sure that it is reconised and visible in the Windows Device Manager.

We made it past that, it seemed he needed to run the program as administrator for it to work.
Depending on his user account privilages, Windows may not allow him to partition/formatt/manipulate the HDD using any tool/program. Hence he needs to run such programs as the Administrator (Or it would be doomed to fail).

    Yes, I forgott the 32GB-Limit.

    Btw.: What HDD-Type/Brand/Manufacturer/... is it?

The internal HD, mustnīt be pre-partitioned&formatted.
When I bought my 200GB-Seagate, Iīd put it in the PS2 and formatted it with a 48bit-patched HDL.

Btw.: How do your "Options" look like?
Try to turn on "48Bit HDLoader" in "Override Application Mode", if it isnīt already.

if his HDD is more than 137GB 48bit will be available and will pop up automatically .if not then it wont show up .. ( WinHIIP )

i think its either the way he connect the hdd to pc or the limitation

Well, the 48bit format option sorta appeared on its own, and he formatted the drive with a Full format which took several hours. But, he is still unable to put games onto the HDD. The "Add Images" option is still grayed out. hdl_dumb says that the HDD is "not ready". We don't really know what to do.
