to load games off of the hard drive with no modchip? As of now, i have the exploit set to load PS2menu, and from there I can load the compressed HDloader util. it boots up fine. ATM I dont have a hard drive and the util recognizes this. That isnt a problem. I just want to know if I could get a hard drive and copy games to it and play them even without a modchip?

    Yes.

Edit: Whatever you do, don't get a Western Digital drive.

Thanks for the help, and I figured my question might be too specific to use the search engine, but next time I will. BTW, I have a 20gb IBM hdd lying around, will that work?

there is nothing wrong with western digital hard drives; all you need to do is unscrew some screws in your network adapter to modify.

Yeah, with a T6 Torx screwdriver/bit, which is IMPOSSIBLE to find :P

By the way, the HD loader technically only supports drives of size 40gb-120gb. There have been varying reports of success with anything smaller... worth a try I suppose but no guarantees.
