You can probably find a hdloader elf (executeable) file around on the net somewhere. You need some way to load it though, did you do the memory card exploit yet?

Even if he had the exploit installed he would not be able to trigger it with his PS1 disc since he doesnt have a working laser. If you have a modchip with dev1/2 you could do this. But you would still need some way of getting the apps to the MC in the first place even with a dev1/2 chip.
