Okay, ive been researching this thing for awhile. You cannot use the disc on a ps2 without having a mod chip with atad patching. Thats nice and all. The atad file is located inside one of the pak files on the disc. Now heres the question. If someone has an original hdd and used the disc correctly or someone with the atad patching mod chip, could they extract the data off the hdd connected to a pc and patch the file from the extracted files. Data is saved both to the ps2 hdd and the memcard, so one of the files that determines that the hdd is orig ps2 hardware should be in there somewhere. After extracting the files then the iso could be reconstructed to work will all hdds. Just an idea. What do you think?

Sony's HDD utilities are no more imune to cracking than any other software, so of course they can be cracked. Even if the precise method you describe doesn't do it, naturally some other variant could. But a more relevant question is whether or not it would be worthwhile to do this.

In my opinion it wouldn't be.

i understand the complications you speak of, but where the developers have lacked in creating a dashboard like xbox, using this tool could create a file explorer and launcher similar to xbox avalaunch. i have seen people with the orig sony hdd have used it for hdloader to boot off the hdd. so you can use all the other tools but theoretically wouldnt need a ps1 boot disc ne more or the mc exploit. the possiblity of eliminating these restriction would allow greater possibilities for software expansion.

Perhaps it could be used as well as you describe, although I expect it would take not just cracking, but extensive rewrite, to get around some known limitations. (The 28-bit LBA issue. The anti-PAL-console issue. etc.) I also believe that such cracking would cross over from the world of copyright violations into the much rougher world of patent violations (The Magic-Gate issue).

One very important consideration is that Sony WOULD take such cracking as a formal declaration of full-scale WAR, and would use any and all powers at their command to crush any parties to such a development. (Including any web sites posting such stuff.)

Do we really want this ? IMHO the possible gains are not worth it.
With a good mod-chip we can already gain most of those benefits anyway.

good point, but then again, why does sony no go after the makers of hdloader and such programs that bypass security. people pirate games through these methods. where games and acc are some of sony's biggest money makers. hacking a program that is no long supported in north america because of its lack of interest from other software manufactures seems a bit significant. im not sayin they wouldnt care, but reverse engineering of software is all how other software titles are made. every program is a copy of anothers with slight modification. the makers of hdloader were ripped off form crackers making hdloader free and then hdadvance. they are now easily accessible because of software reverse engineers that wish to create a better program. i just figured that using sonys built in program to allow further expansion of the ps2 capabilities would be excellent to see. i myself have no knowledge of coding, but patching for 48 bit support would not be needed becasue all you have to have is a partition early on for data transfer from mc to hdd. and the other dev programs like hdloader and media players contain 48 bit support to access larger hdds.
