Basically such an approach should work, provided you do it right of course...

I used a massive title.db file, changed directory filenames to BADSATA for US PS2,
    "BADSATA" ???
Please, if you are going to discuss technical details, try to be precise...!!!
I assume that you are really referring to "/BADATA-SYSTEM/" above. Right ?

instead of the ftp.elf filename in the install.cnf file I put the app I wanted. Stuck in a 300mb dummy file, created an ISO, burned it and booted it up. Didn't boot in PS2 mode so I switched to PSX mode and it went as far as the Playstation spash screen. That's it...

I fail to see why it doesn't work since I only did minor changes to your iso.
There could be many reasons. You don't mention how you rebuilt the ISO, and that could very well be the problem. (Like using Nero or another simple burner, rather than cdgenPS2, to compose the ISO.)

You also don't seem to be aware of the huge difference between a PS1 CD and a PS2 CD, as you attempted to boot this one (definitely PS2) in PS1 mode. If that is the case, then you really should read up on that stuff.

No, you are trying to simplify it TOO much.
EXPLORE.ELF is the program that performs the installation, so if you remove that, then nothing will be installed. The SYSTEM.CNF file must point to this EXPLORE.ELF (in its BOOT2 reference), not to any dummy. Also, the EXPLORE.ELF will insist on storing a MENU.TXT file (consider it garbage) into a folder named "mc0:/BOOT/" so I advice you to still use that folder and the icon set I provided for it. That "/BOOT/" folder is also a suitable place to put any ELFs you want on your MC.

for your information, i had the exploit done on a ps2 of a mate which was modded, so I have now to cope without ftpexec but only my hdloader+winiip

ps: wonder how it would works, as I don't know the load sequence, is it system.cnf then install.cnf or if it is the install.cnf that is controled by the lauchelf ?
On all PS2 discs it is SYSTEM.CNF which chooses which program on the disc to boot. For this disc that program is EXPLORE.ELF, which will open the file INSTALL.CNF and execute the commands in it.

LAUNCHELF.ELF is not involved in the above process at all, except for being one of the files to be copied onto the MC, when the commands I wrote into INSTALL.CNF are executed by EXPLORE.ELF .

I hope this clarifies things for you.
