no u do not need a modchip . there are many wats to boot hdloader. most drives will fit western digital will take some work to fit

So can any size H.D. be used in the PS2 and are the new 50001 models any different as far as supporting a bigger drive than the 40GB. ???

There is a free version floating around, but you'll need to hunt it down....otherwise, you can purchase it from retailers like Foundmy.

It will support up to 137GB as a maximum. All versions of PS2 will support the large capcity, if you are not using it for official games that require the HDD like Final Fantasy XI
