You can use a standard hd, but some of them don't fit quite right on the PS2 Network Adapter

I believe that the hdd of the Xbox is formatted in a different way (it's not NTFS or FAT32). To get that hdd working (on your PC or PS2) you should "unlock" it.
Check this: http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/pc-hdd.php

U can connect the harddisk to your com and format the drive using winhipp or other programs like that.
HdLoader and HdAdvance are very very similar. I'll recommend HdLoader as i'm using it. U can buy HdLoader CD online or just download it and burn it. But your PS2 set must be modded.

yeah,i dont have my ps2 modded so i was wondering if theres another way of using hdloader , also i would like to know if theres some kind of softmod for the ps2 and a way to ftp to my memcard,i was reading that you can get some kind of things through ftp to your mc so heres what i have :mc obviously, my network adaptor, crossover cable and knowledge in the use of ftp,in my case i use smartftp so i was wondering if i could ftp to my mc by just conecting my ps2 to my comp and then ftp to it with smartftp,if thats the case where can i see the mc in my ftp client, will it appear as a folder and what will be the name of it,thanks

With a PS2 it's not that easy to boot anything other than pressed discs without a mod chip. The best non-mod methods require that you have an old PS2 (not the new 'slim' PStwo) and some way of getting the exploit code onto your PS2 memory card. But the PS2 itself has no FTP ability to help you with that. You can use FTP on a PS2, but only after you boot a homebrew FTP server. So that is not much help in getting started.
The tricky bit at first is to get the exploit onto that MC, together with some homebrew apps to aid in the installation and use of future stuff. Those apps (known as ELFs on PS2) should of course include HDLoader itself. There are many methods to achieve this, such as the following:
1: Make a CD-R with an exploit installer and trick the PS2 to boot this without knowing that you swapped it in after starting a boot with a pressed disc. This uses the so-called 'knife swap' method, which is bad for your hardware. I don't recommend it...
2: Buy or borrow a 'cheat' unit with ability to transfer game saves from a PC to the PS2 MC. Use this to transfer a save file with the exploit and the apps you need.
3: Buy or borrow an original HDLoader/HDAdvance on a pressed disc. Init your HDD on a PC however, using WinHIIP to install an ISO containing software to install the exploit and the apps you need to MC. Then move the HDD to your PS2 and boot up HDLoader to run that ISO.
4: Buy or borrow an original disc for SwapMagic 3.6, and also a USB pen drive. When you boot that disc it can start an ELF from the USB drive, and that can then let you copy additional files from the USB drive to the MC, thereby installing the exploit and other apps.
5: The easiest way of all. Let someone who already has such stuff installed simply copy it onto your MC.
There are probably other ways too, which I can't think of right now, but I'm sure you get the idea by now. The exploit, and methods like the above, are the main keys to running homebrew stuff on a non-mod PS2. So I suggest you check out some of the many exploit tutorials available, both on this and on most other PS2 sites.

You already said it,im asking for help not asking for someone to tell me about the search button ,if youre not helping then go elsewhere and abstain from posting here, i already used the search button and i couldnt find what i wanted ,so thats why im posting in the forums, arent they made for that? if you always tell people that is looking for help to use the search button then i guess the only noob here is you
