Need some help on hdl dump and connection problems
Need some help on hdl dump and connection problems –
09-05-2010,10:49 AM
I am trying to put some of my backups onto my ide harddrive in my fat ps2 from my macbook pro laptop (lan connection). I am using Windows XP from bootcamp on my mac.
However I am horrible at networking and am not sure what I am supposed to do in order to configure the network for my ps2.
I open up the ulaunch and open hdld_svr.elf from my external hd.
It then says in hdld_svr-0.8.5:
"using mc0:sys-conf/ipconfig.dat
invalid configuration file format; use:
ip_address network_mask gateway_ip
seperated by a single space: for example:192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1
Playsation 2 IP address: 192.168.0.10
Ready"
My network settings for the local area connection have the tcp/ip properties with
192.168.0.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1
which is the ps2 ip i think.
I know I am probably really screwing something up, any help or an explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Change your ps2 ip to 192.168.0.1
because your ps2 and pc have then same ip and that can't be but
from what your settings are on your pc it looks like you have the same ip address.
or better yet change your ip on pc
192.168.0.20
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.10
then it should work
but if not then change
ps2 ip as follows
192.168.0.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.20

Mask:255.255.255.000
Gateway: 192.168.000.010
I turned the firewall off on windows xp just in case.
I still get the same message when I boot the .elf

Maybe a bad ELF try down loading again both program and ELF see if it helps
and need to know how you have connection to pc noticed lan connections you need to check your router ip and make sure
your routers not blocking your ip address and unblock ps2 and pc to each other
gate way must match router for gateway
this link may help you setup router

@grunge782:
Some things to consider/check:
First off, please stop referring to "uLaunch" as no software by that name exists...
The proper name is "uLaunchELF", and the proper abbreviation is "uLE"
1: In the uLE network settings menu there are three editable IP-number fields for IP Address, Netmask and Gateway, and the next line below those three is a command to save all those settings as the "SYS-CONF/IPCONFIG.DAT" file on the memory card.
Failure to find that file could be because you failed to use this 'Save' command, meaning that the file never was created.
2: Creation of a file in the "SYS-CONF" folder does require that folder to exist. So does it ?
3: Networking configuration details differ for the case of directly connecting a PS2 to a PC and the case of connecting them indirectly through a router, and you never said which method you use. For use with a router it is the IP address of that router which should be configured as 'Gateway', both at the PC and at the PS2 side of the connection. But for a direct connection each unit should configure the IP address of the other unit as 'Gateway'.
NB: The example in your latest post is correct for a direct connection, but not for a connection through router.
4: The hdld_svr program will look for its configuration file in some different places, so even if you have a correct file in the correct location, it may be reading a garbage file from somewhere else. The prime suspects would be "mc?:/B?DATA-SYSTEM/" and possibly the launch folder of the program itself (not sure if that's used). So make sure you don't have some IPCONFIG.DAT files there, to ensure that the program will use the one in "mc0:/SYS-CONF/"
5: Possibly something weird has happened with the IPCONFIG.DAT file in SYS-CONF (assuming that both do exist), making it impossible to edit correctly. Then use the uLE FileBrowser to manually delete the IPCONFIG.DAT file, and then use the uLE configuration menu and its network settings submenu to set the data from scratch and save a new IPCONFIG.DAT file, after which you double-check that you can see it in the SYS-CONF folder using the uLE FileBrowser. And after that you're ready for more server testing...

Thank you both for the help. I deleted the hdld elf file and ipconfig.dat. I then put the hdld elf on my memory card and then put in the network settings through uLE and saved the settings. I now can get the ps2 to be ready and that message no longer appears when I boot up the hdld file.
To answer your question I have the ps2 directly connected to my Macbook laptop.
However when I open the hdl dumb program on my computer I get this message-
"Unexpected problem
The device is not ready"
I then go into the GUI and click attach on the line " networking server at 192.168.0.10"
and I get the message
"Not an APA partition"
I used hd loader before this and formated the drive. Is this affecting it?
I might just use OPL network games instead of the internal drive if necessary (though I will have to work on understanding how to use USBUtil to get the ps2 to recognize your games).
EDIT:
I tried installing Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires from HDloader and I am having the same problems as in this thread
http://www.psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51298
There are no games listed so I can't uninstall it and I don't see any option in HDloader to reformat the drive. How would I reformat it in the ps2 then?

Caution
uLauchELF
then
FileBrowser
then
MISC/
then
HddManager
thenR1
then
Format
then
OK
Warning will delete all on HD

so watch it but if you don't mind starting over on HD not a problem

Good. Then I think the basic networking issue may already be solved.
But it would be better if you could also try to verify this by using some other methods than just HDL-Dumb. But on a Mac I'm not really sure what is possible. (SMB filesharing to SMS for media playing maybe ?)

Like I said, using a Mac makes things so much harder, than if you were using a normal Windows OS...
However when I open the hdl dumb program on my computer I get this message-
"Unexpected problem
The device is not ready"
No problem, because that message does NOT refer to the HDD in the PS2 nor to the network connection. It refers only to an attempt to access a PS2 HDD connected to the local IDE bus of the computer. And since you don't connect it that way this attempt should give the "device not ready" result. This is no error at all, but merely an informative message telling you that the direct-connected HDD access method is not available. To you this does not matter, but it would be an important error message for someone who had tried to connect a PS2 HDD directly to the computer. But you should just ignore it.
I then go into the GUI and click attach on the line " networking server at 192.168.0.10"
That seems like the right thing to do (it is what I do with HDL-Dumb under WinXP).
and I get the message
"Not an APA partition"
This is bad, and I have no idea why it happens.
I used hd loader before this and formated the drive. Is this affecting it?
APA is the only format HDLoader can create, so that should not be a problem.
But it could be a problem if you used an old version of HDLoader (with 28-bit LBA drivers) to format a modern HDD with a size larger than 128GiB (requires 48-bit LBA drivers).
I might just use OPL network games instead of the internal drive if necessary (though I will have to work on understanding how to use USBUtil to get the ps2 to recognize your games).
With the present public OPL release you will have to use USBUtil to install games, but for the next release to come (matching current betas) that will not be necessary. The new beta revisions already support use of normal ISO files instead, provided only that you name them properly (how is documented elsewhere), and store them in the correct subfolders of the fileshare. This has made game installation much easier, and today I use all my games in this form.
EDIT:

If HDLoader refuses to format the HDD there are two things you can do about it.
1: Use a computer to format the HDD to any format whatever (none match the APA format). And when that is done move the HDD back into the PS2 and try HDLoader again. It should then format the drive for you, as the existing format will then be incompatible.
2: Boot uLaunchELF and use the HddManager subprogram found by navigating the FileBrowser into the pseudo folder "MISC/" (shown in the FileBrowser root directory). That HddManager contains commands in a menu opened by the R1 button, just as in FileBrowser but for HDD-specific commands. The "Format" command will format the entire HDD, while the command "Create" can be used to make user partitions for storing generic normal files (not PS2 games, they have to be installed by other means). Note that user partitions on the PS2 always have a mandatory '+' prefix, which will be added to whatever name you choose to enter. So if you enter "OPL", the resulting partition will be named "+OPL".
Be aware also that there may be a delay at entry to the HddManager while it attempts to read old HDD content. And if much old content is present (or falsely appears to be present) such a delay can last for a few minutes.

Thank you. I was able to format the drive, but unfortunately I still ran into some problems.
I am actually running windows xp on my mac from bootcamp. The drive I am using is a 30 GB AT Fireball lct 20.
I went through uLE and like I said was able to format the drive. I then booted up the hdld elf and was able to attach in the dump GUI this time. I pulled up an iso backup I had on my computer which is Star Wars Bounty Hunter and installed.
I didn't see any new information come up on my ps2 in the hdld elf when installing though, but the gui on my computer still showed the progress bar all the way until it installed.
I then tried opening it up in OPL but it just froze when I tried to load the hard drive. Then I tried HDloader which did actually show the game this time, however when I tried to boot/play the game it just took me to a black screen.
I then proceed to try to put another game on, but this time I got the "Not an APA partition" error again.
Is it possible that a problem is being caused because I am using hdld 0.8.6 instead of a newer version (I tried using 1.5 and 2.2 but I could get neither to open on windows xp)? I am not sure if I should keep pursuing this, maybe I should just go the filesharing route from my computer. dlanor you said there were beta revisions that support just plain isos?
