My HDD decided to stop working, I think... –

well, i ripped metal gear solid 2 using the built in ripping feature just to try it out. everything worked fine, the game loaded, everything was sweet. then, one day, it decided it was going to stop working. HD loader ran off the memory card and all of that good stuff, but then when i tell it to load mgs2, it flickers a few black screens as if its going to work, and eventuall just sits there without loading up.
im using the hdloader + memory card + ps1 game exploit to get her running.
heres the wierd part: if i leave the memory card in the ps2 and try to just load mgs2 normally from the retail dvd, it will do the same thing and come back to the browser. if i take the memory card out, mgs2 runs fine from the disc. after the screen comes up to notify me that i have no memory card inserted, i tell the game to continue, and then try to trick the ps2 by putting in the memory card. the ps2 then stops responding, goes to a black screen, and eventually heads back to the browser.
i will try to reformat the harddrive (a maxtor 61gb hdd) using winhiip and then loading mgs3 (not 2) from a downloaded version to see if i cant get it working. i thought maybe someone else might have run into this problem and could help me.
thanks in advance.

To me this doesn't sound like a problem with your hdd, if you put in an original and it did the same thing, did you happen to think that it might be your memory card. Sounds like it to me, if you created a save game the first time, it might be corrupt. Try deleting that first and seeing if it boots from both the dvd and hdd. I'm sure it probably will though. It most likely is that metal gear 2 might need a datestamp patch. I know there is a thread here about the games that used it. Use search find it and see if it's one of those games that need a datestamp patch. If you can't find out whether it does or not, I still say try hdloader with each datestamp patch save and see if it works when you boot it again.
