My Disk Drive Doesn't work. What can I do now?

Here is my situation. I got a playstation 2 for free from some guy I know that doesn't read disks, at all. I'm trying to restore life to this otherwise dead playstation 2. I have an HDD device, usb device, and an old ps1 memory card. I'm new to this forums and playstation hacking in general so, I'm rather lost. I found this forum and thought it would be the best to start for this kind of thing.

BTW: If anybody is curious about nds hacking, I'm very familiar with this.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. And sorry if this has been asked before.

I am no expert by any means on this but for one the ps2 has to be able to read discs, if it can't read anything i believe your going to be out of luck. It needs to be able to read a ps1 disc to trigger the exploit, only for a brief second or so. Two, you need a regular ps2 memory card not a psx1 card and you need psx1 disc,almost any will work. But i got my info. from google. There is a section in this forum dedicated for the ps2 exploit also called softmodding i believe. I found plenty of tuts for the ps2 exploit. i suggest searching this site/forum or google for "ps2 exploit" or"softmodding your ps2" as all the info. you want is there if you search.

You could chip it with a chip that loads from dev mode and have someone else load your memory card by whatever means with ULE. Then you could use it with hdl, sms, or whatever.

ok, what's the quickest, bestest, and cheapest (i know i'm asking too much) mod chip I can get, and where can I get it? I've taken my ps2 completly apart and put it back together without f#%king it up, and I'm a computer tech, so I'm not afraid to install something... as long as there are guides for it.

I've got a DMS3+ that I doubt I'll ever use.
