Hi there. I have an old PS2 fat with a network adapter and a 40 gig hard drive. Nothing fancy, and all of the things work like they're supposed to.

Now, what I'm wanting to do is this:
From the IDE interface on the Network Adapter, run an IDE to USB cable to a female to female USB adapter, which will be mounted on a hole drilled in the side of the PS2. So then I will get an external enclosure and just plug that into the USb port that I've just created.

    To recap:

Network Adapter - IDE to USB cord - Female to Female USB adapter - External Hard Drive enclosure.

So, will this work? Assuming I get quality goods of course.
    Thanks a lot,
    thaeix

    I don't see why it won't work.
Of course, you might not get top performance from such a setup as even USB 2.0 is not as fast as the ATA-66 standard.

But your millage might vary, depending on the quality and compatibility of the IDE-to-USB adaptor and enclosure you get.

Thanks, I suspected it would work, but I am not entirely sure.

It's female, isn't it? If the hard drive is male (it has pins) then the cord is female (it has holes).

Sorry to be the one to inform you, but what you suggest will at best not work and at worst will damage/destroy either the network adaptor, the hard drive or both.

Look up USB power pin definitions and use basic dc power theory and you will see why.

What I think he really meant to say is that normally adapters between USB and IDE are intended only to allow connection of an external IDE drive to an existing USB port of a computer.

What you want to do is the reverse.
To connect an external USB drive to an existing IDE port.

And I have never seen any such adapter.
Neither in real life nor in advertisements.

    Best regards: dlanor

    Dlanor is correct.

The only hardware adapters to go in to ide that I am aware of would be cf. You could feasibly put a cf card slot on your box but I'm fairly confident usb would be out of question.

Sorry, I get it now. I guess there is just no way this would work. Could you install an IDE to SATA adapter and then a SATA hot-swapping bay, assuming I didn't have to worry about the case?

you could but dont expect to hot swap while the PS2 is on. the dock may support hotswap but the PS2 does not. if you do swap between drives you will need to turn the PS2 off swap then turn it on . this is because you are still going through the IDE bus on the PS2 and IDE does not support hotswap.
