Ok, I've read through many guides regarding the mc exploit but they all require a ps1 game to boot up. I read in one of the threads that you could just boot it straight from the MC. Can someone point me to where the instructions for this are?
I have a V9 ps2 with a Magic V mod.
First of all, you need to understand what the 'exploit' is.
The word 'exploit' means that something is exploited to make this stuff work. In fact it is a software weakness in the PS1 driver, which will load a file named TITLE.DB from the system settings save on the memory card. If that file contains a disc ID matching the ID of the PS1 disc being loaded, and if the file also contains the 'exploit' patch, then the PS1 driver will 'crash' in such a way that the code of the exploit is executed.
This will only happen if the PS2 is running the PS1 driver and trying to launch a PS1 disc, so normally that would be impossible without a PS1 disc in the tray.
The booting 'straight from MC' that you heard about only applies to mod chips that support so-called 'devolution mode 1', which is just a fancy way of saying 'booting directly from MC'.
If your own chip did support that, you'd probably already know about it, right ? So I have to assume it doesn't, which means that you must use some disc in the tray to launch anything at all. And for the exploit to work, that disc needs to be 'seen' by the PS2 as being a PS1 disc.
However, a mod-chip can fool the PS2 into believing that a disc is something else than what it really is. Some mod-chips allow you to force the PS2 to boot up in PS1 mode, regardless of the type of CD in the tray, and it is possible to trigger an exploit this way too.

I'm not familiar with your Magic V chip, so I don't know if PS1 booting can be enforced this way or not. Just try it yourself.
