I just got my harddrive (Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 7200rpm 8mb 120gb harddrive) and network adapter for the PS2. I connected everything and booted HDAdvance, and it successfully detected and formatted the harddrive. Everything was fine, the only abnormal thing was that the ps2 made a lot more noise than usual (sounded like the fan went into full speed), but I assumed that was something which is supposed to happen.

After that I disconnected everything and put the harddrive into the PC so I could start using WinHIIP, but as soon as I turned on the computer I heard a noise as if something was turning itself on and off all the time. It was obviously the harddrive, I tried to connect the harddrive to my other computer as well but the same thing happened. After that I connected the harddrive back into the PS2, and the same thing happened. It made the same noise. I guess I can conclude that the harddrive is dead... but does anyone have any clue why this happened? Could it have been a defect harddrive?

Possible. Check Your Ide Connections And Make Sure Jumpers Are Opk, But It Does Should Liek The Hard Drive Is Messed Up.... Its Ok Tho... If You Have A Credit Card... Go To The Maxtor Website.... The Offer An Exchange... U Enter Your Credit Card Info And They Send You A New Hard Drive .... Then You Send Back The Defected One In The Same Box The New One Came In, And Send The Messed Up One To Them With There Free Posting. If You Dont Send Back The Defected One , They Charge You Like $60. But If You Send The Messed Up One To Them...u Dont Get Changed A Dime And They Send It Like 2 Day Mail With Tracking Number.... Its Kool Cuz I Went Thru It B4.

I just connected my half-dead 200gb (well, the drive works, it just has some kind of fault where it crashes once a month :\ ) to my PS2 to just see what might have gone wrong with my 120gb, and I'm starting to become sure the last one was defect. The PS2 doesn't make as much noise with this drive, and when I formatted the 120gb it went abnormally quick. I didn't really think about it until now as I'm formatting the 200gb and it's taking a long time, which I guess it logically should. By the way, does anyone have an exact figure how long a 200gb would take to be formatted?

Even a 200 gb drive shouldnt take more than half a minute under the ps2. my 120 took 5 seocnds, and the 160 drive i had took 10 seconds.

    Oh crap :\

HDAdvance has had the "formatting" screen for about an hour now, I just thought it took a long time...

Right, I resetted the machine but HDAdvance would just freeze each time I loaded it. And I realized the machine was making as much noise with the 120gb afterall. So the 200gb behaved just like the 120gb in the ps2 besides the fact that HDAdvance froze at formatting, and would freeze each time after that :\

I just tried to put the 200gb back in the pc and it's still working. But I still have no idea why it made HDAdvance freeze. And I haven't confirmed the 120gb was defect or it was damaged by something. I'm open to ideas if anyone have them :|

(by the way, the 200gb is a Seagate Barracuda)

I had the same problem with a hard drive that would not format for some reason, so I put it in pc and did a quick format and tried again and it worked 2nd time around.

Ah, just found out why the 200gb made HDAdvance freeze. I needed to have a PS2 disc in the tray for it to work. So I connected it back and things seems to work just fine. There's one thing though, the reset button seems to have a new life of it's own now. Clicking it once will turn off the machine after a seconds, and pressing it for a long time will also make it shut right down. Is there no way to reset the machine like usual? Is it supposed to act that way?

network adaptor does that, I guess to prevent accidental shut down.
