Ok, so i 'm new ( newbee for ps2) i come from the big xbox scene, just want to make sure for the PS2 i can use any IDE HD no bigger than 300 GB , the main app here to load game from HD is teh HDloader, and of course you need a modchips just like xbox, or you can do teh so called " exploits"....
THe HDloader is not free right, what are my other option besides this one?
and i see you can tranfer files over the computer using FTP just liek xbox, my next question will be " game" i can back up game on a dvd-r or + as easy as the xbox?
Thanks for ant reply
I'll try and answer your questions
As far as I know you can use a hard disk up to 2 terrabytes with the new patch for hdloader, although I may have misread something and someone might want to back me up on that, but I'm pretty sure.
You don't exaclty need a mod chip although it is recommended as without one you need to disc swap to play dvdr backups, the exploit simply lets you run apps off your memory card meaning, for the poor people like me, you can run hdloader off memory card and cogswap (a prog used for disc swapping).
HDLoader is sort of free and sort of not. True there are places selling it but if you read around the forums you'll find it's actually been banned from being sold or something, it's a touchey subject but I'm sure you could find it on say, emule HDLoader is pretty much the only option for running stuff off HD, or atleast the best as most other programs are simply clones of it.
Yes you can copy games pretty much as easily as the xbox as its a simple straight copy although some older pstwos are fussy about what media so make sure its good quality and dvd_r tends to work better for the older pstwos
An original copy of HDloader is not free. But you can either run a copy of it with a modchip.......or use an exploit to run HD loader on an "un-modified ps2". I don't have a modchip and thats what I use. You can get the exploit for free but not here. Search elsewhere. However loading the exploit could be a bit difficult. I used my max drive and loaded it as a game save. If you know someone with a modded ps2 then they can do it for you. Cool thing about exploit is....you can then copy it to other people's memory cards and then can have HD's in their ps2.
Copying ps2 games is as easy as copying music cd's.....as far as loading backups to HD you need to do it on your PC unless you have a modchip of course...
Hope this helps.
unmodded v10 PS2 NTSC
120 GB Maxtor Hardrive
HDL exploit (Key Launcher)
PS1 game: Twisted Metal 3
PS2 remote ( w/ reset button )
You can do that, but FTPing to PS2 is complicated (mount/unmount partitions) and the transfer speeds are practically insufficent for game backups or large files.

looks like your questions have been answered. but i will give you a bried overview as to what you should use to make life really simple for ps2 backups:
external usb hdd enclosure (so you can slap your ps2 drive in there and plug into your pc)
winhiip or hdl_dump. (winhiip is gui and is much easier to use. there is a gui version of hdl_dump called hdl_dumb. check them both out, the choice is yours) these pc tools will allow you to install games onto your ps2 drive connected to your pc. and chances are, your pc drive can read ANY format +/- doesn't matter.
you can buy HDLoader (i bought mine when it first came out, just before it was banned). you can also find the elf file on the net. but whatever you do, it's much easier to simply use the elf file along with hdl_patch to upgrade it with more compatablility options (see that thread-http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27640) and then upload that elf to your memory card, along with the exploit and a loader app like the ps2 key launcher (don't use the newest versions as i've read some problems with it) or ps2menu.
for this you don't necessarily need a modchip, you can do this if you own swap magic discs and either a flip top or the cogswaptool to open the tray at swap time. or if you know someone who does have a modded ps2 or some variation thereof, you can use his/her machine to install to a memcard.
once you have all this set up, all you'll ever need in your ps2 drive is a valid ps1 disc (which you specified in the xploit TITLE.DB file) to trigger the exploit and load your hdloader.
while i'm sure this may sound like a pain to get started, once you have the files/tools, this will take no more than perhaps 15minutes (tops) of your time. this includes burning the disc to install the memcard, etc. a real time amount is more like 5 minutes. it is really easy.
you can ftp, but since i've never done this as it's always seemed cumbersome to me, i can't give you any pointers on that.
